10 valuable lessons I’ve learned over 20 years of photoshooting… and 18 bts pics of me squeezed in a bathroom

1. Always lift, never slide furniture…. Or you too can watch a leg snap off a custom sofa, not fun!
2. Command strips are the devil… I’ve seen them take off not only paint but also drywall…. just hold the art, you can retouch out fingers faster than you can clean up shattered glass
3. Sometimes neighbors be nosy, sometimes they see your strobe flashing through the windows and think it’s a house alarm and call the cops… and they show up. Nope just me :)… no advice here… just facts
4. I’ve shot around bee hives, snapping turtles, snakes, toddlers, and giant tarantulas. I’ve stood on the roof of my car, ladders, cherry pickers and cliffs, wind gusts, rain, hail, and hurricanes…. But nothing is scarier than a dog with the zoomies. Mind your gear, don’t leave lenses on tables, or tripods unattended or you too can watch your camera fall. Tears have been shed. Don’t put it down, put it away.
5. Prep prep prep! Do the walk through, get scouting shots, talk vision, I love a plan. I may not follow it… but planning is dope.
6. Water safe vessels are not always water safe…. I don’t care what the tag says. Do not leave water in vases, especially overnight, especially on surfaces. I have horror stories because of water safe vessels
7. Must haves- magic erasers, walnuts, clips, tape, multitool, hairdryer, bug spray, sunscreen, slippers
8. Don’t trip on my wires!!! I did that once over 10 years ago, it ended my camera, and I still have PTSD, learn from my pain.
9. Always have a back up plan!! A backup camera, batteries, cords, lenses… even pants, a backup to the backup. Might as well have three. Shit happens, things break, cords go bad, batteries get fried, and lenses drop… sometimes you even turn the shower on with your rear end and end up soaked, a change of pants is always a good idea 😁
10. Most importantly!!!! Drink more water… trust me! Iykyk !!coffee and crisp coke while technically liquids, do not count as water.

A raised planter at the front of this contemporary Washington, D.C. residence features a pairing of two resilient plants: NewGen Independence® Boxwood and Pennsylvania Sedge (Carex pensylvanica).

Developed by @saundersbrothersnursery in Piney River, Virginia, NewGen Independence® emerged from years of rigorous research and testing following the arrival of Boxwood Blight in the U.S. in 2011. Bred for exceptional resistance to both blight and Boxwood Leafminer, it provides structured, lasting greenery.

Beneath the boxwoods, Pennsylvania Sedge offers a soft, fine-textured contrast. Native to eastern and central North America, this semi-evergreen perennial spreads slowly via rhizomes to form a dense, weed-suppressing ground cover, creating a lush grass-like carpet.

It’s all in the details when it comes to working with neutrals. Texture, depth, contrast and the smallest out-of-the-box ideas are what turns a boring neutral design into something elevated and soulful.
