A whirlwind trip into Manhattan to celebrate @pattiannnyc and @lowrienick who make me believe in love. Thank you for trusting me with this ceremony. It's been the honor of my life.

If anyone else needs a poet to wed them on a Manhattan rooftop, call yr girl. It was a joy and a privilege and life-giving. There's nothing better than doing this work for the people we love.

Various snaps of best friends, bitter drinks, books on books, and Prada pups. New York, there is nowhere else quite like you.

Free your ass and your mind will follow (yep. That's what I meant.)

Mothership 3.0 touches down in New Orleans, fifty years after it's introduction. Music history was made.

We danced and cried and laughed and sweated and Big Boi was there and Trombone Shorty and Big Freedia and so many other incredible artists.

Thank you, @yolikegeorge & @werpfunk

Love to my crew. Of course Double Club hosted the after-party. I don't make the rules.

Calling all poets! Award-winning local poet Stacey Balkun will lead a free workshop tomorrow (Thurs., July 16) at Norman Mayer Library at 5pm.

The class will explore absence in poetry and how white space and implication can create meaning out of mystery...a perfect tie-in for this year's writing contest theme 👀

Submissions are open through July 31! Entering a writing contest like this one is a great way to share your work with your community, and maybe even win a prize.

Three winners in each category will receive an Amazon Gift Card: 1st place $100, 2nd place $50, 3rd place $25.

PLUS the top 10 submissions in each category will be published in the 4th edition of RENEWED: A New Orleans Public Library Anthology in 2026.

Prizes and publications are made possible by the Library Foundation of New Orleans.

The finale… 🤘🏾🛸

On Friday, I already threw a Mothership pre-flight party that was for funkateers (P-Funk fans) and was attended by both funkateers and so many members of the P-Funk band and family (thank you)! So by Sunday, my party-throwing was over. Or so I thought.

When super funkateer Sonya Murphy messaged me to see if I could set up a meetup for more of the fans who’d arrived Sunday, I had to do it. After all, I love welcoming people to my city and I’ve been engaging funkateers here my entire adult life.

Thank you to @neworleansdoubleclub, which is half craft cocktail lounge and half dive bar. They allowed us (with hours notice) to take over their space and play P-Funk music and videos while we celebrated the Mothership landing after Essence Fest. My sincerest gratitude to bartender Dominic for giving us that freedom and creating space for us.

It was a tricky spot because when I set it up, I didn’t realize the city had blocked vehicle access to most French Quarter streets - including Chartres St, where the club is. But the Quarter was dead, and I found parking about 4 blocks away and walked.

Even with the blocked access, we still had a good ole throwdown and I loved meeting new funkateers and enjoying with friends. I was exhausted though, and I went as hard as I could before I had no more to give. I’m sorry I wasn’t able to stay until several members of the P-Funk family and band also showed up to this part 2.

Here are a few snaps from the Sunday party.

With gratitude to you, Sonya @smurphyah for doing so much for the P-Funk fan community these days. Reminds me of how I was back in the 1990s for my old One Nation P-Funk Page and Board Room. While I no longer do any any organizing like back in the day, I am always Team P-Funk and I will never say no when anyone in the wide P-Funk network needs or remembers me. 🤘🏾

I’m not saying I don’t make a damn good Pimm’s Cup. I’m just saying Fives is one of my favorite in the city. Especially when shared w/ old & new friends!
