A wide arc this episode. Opens with Ambrose Akinmusire and Mary Halvorson on Nonesuch, drifts through Momoko Gill’s BBC Maida Vale session, Jeff Parker’s International Anthem patience, French jazz from Florian Pellissier and an Estonian-Finnish summit between Joel Remmel Trio and Jukka Eskola. Mid-show ducks into Helsinki soul territory — Jimi Tenor and Pratt & Moody both backed by Cold Diamond & Mink — with a Mustik Motel home moment from Tahmela Six. Closes hot: Irreversible Entanglements incendiary on Verve, Finnish heat from Selma Savolainen and Aaron Koskelainen Stampede, and Kamaal Williams live at Flesh and Bones.

Radio Soho Tampere features jazz every Saturday from noon till two. Next week, Santeri will host the same slot with his Kaikki on Jazzia show. Hämeenpuisto Special Spotify and Tidal playlists are updated next Sunday. I’ll return with new set of two hours of new music in two weeks!

Into the Vappu-weekend with the Jazz Dungeon recording, now available on YouTube! 🎷🎈

Mid-March saw our beloved studio shapeshift into a jazzy dungeon as Aaron Koskelainen Stampede took over with their drums and saxophones.

The event was streamed live, but due to popular demand we are happy to announce that you can re-witness (or witness for the first time in case you missed out) the magic of what we have coined the Jazz Dungeon series.

And since we know you’re already wondering… yes, more is to come….

ps. while we have your attention, note that radio will remain closed on 1.5 as we do on all public holidays. Listen back on the jazz dungeon or our previous shows at idaidaida.net <3 Skål!

Special thanks to

@korijazz

@dj_eero_loyttyjarvi from Smooth as Butter for bringing the groove with their vinyls.

& @nasha_helsinki collective for the technical support

From Willy Rodriguez’s opening call to follow the light, the show fans out across continents — Finnish intimacy at Mustik Motel with Mika Kallio & Janne Tuomi, Selma Savolainen landing on Whirlwind, and local voices from Aaron Koskelainen Stampede and Arttu Huopainen. Brazilian warmth threads through courtesy of Fabiano Do Nascimento and Alcides Neto, while London’s groove axis checks in hard via Kokoroko on Brownswood and Nubiyan Twist on Strut. There’s room for Chris Potter on Edition, Javier Nero’s Alkebulan, and Ego Ella May’s quiet conviction — before David Walters steers it home on Heavenly Sweetness.

From Tampere to the world and back. We open with three fresh Mustik Motel drops — Hatka, Mika Kallio & Janne Tuomi, and fresh Emma Award winner Kadi Vija — then push outward through Alfa Mist’s solo piano, Selma Savolainen, Irreversible Entanglements, and Shabaka. The back half drifts into afrobeat, neo-soul, global grooves and electronics with Kokoroko, Jill Scott, Maajo and Squarepusher closing the hatch.

Jazz Dungeon presents Aaron Koskelainen Stampede joined by Eero Löyttyjärvi.

🎷 Aaron Koskelainen Stampede 🎷
is a band founded in 2022 that primarily plays music
composed by bassist Aaron Koskelainen. The band draws heavily from improvisation and the tradition of free jazz, approaching music with an open-minded attitude. The intense sound of two tenor saxophones creates a
powerful and unique assemblage when combined with drums and bass.

What an evening! I think this was my favourite @kotkajazz gig this year. Pretty much this would be the answer if someone asked me what jazz is in my opinion.
