💃🏻Last night’s gala to celebrate 25 years of @stanfordbiodesign was so inspiring. Thanks to @joshatcoravin and Paul Yock for the vision and direction over all these years, that so many have benefited from. And thanks to Meghan Stawitcke Lyn Denend @thesurgeonlife Kunj Sheth Ashley Waring and so many others who have been instrumental in advising so many of us.

💡As a Biodesign faculty fellowship alum myself, I am fully convinced that innovation inspired by true need is the way forward!

As I have personally experienced over the last few years, there are so many challenges to overcome in just moving a project forward, but despite the unexpected ups and downs that life can bring, and the many competing responsibilities of an academic physician and surgeon, last night made me feel so energized to keep working to build a new and different future for our patients and our world. 🤗

“We don’t say, how can we use an existing tool well? We look at the problem and say, how can we make a new tool that will allow us to answer questions much, much more effectively?”

This build-the-tool mindset is how Karl Deisseroth and his colleagues developed optogenetics, now routinely used in thousands of labs all over the world.

Deisseroth, a Stanford professor of bioengineering and of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, was one of three scientists awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering and developing optogenetics. @bioe_stanford is a department jointly run by the School of Engineering and @stanford.med.

Karl Deisseroth knew that understanding the brain would take more than understanding its chemistry. He joined Stanford Bioengineering to work alongside people who could build the tools to advance brain science. In this interview he says, “I don’t think I could have done what we did anywhere else, really.”

Karl Deisseroth came to neuroscience through words. His love of literature and writing drew him toward the human brain, and a required psychiatry rotation in medical school set him on the path to developing optogenetics. In this conversation, he traces that journey.

#makeadifference Monday Is Doing For Others Both Great And Small. Whether you are making a donation or working on the field, make today a time to go out of your way for someone else. I wouldn’t be here today, if it were not for an individual putting their “wants” aside to assist me with my “needs.” Make some smile, you might feel just a little happier 🖤🌻💛
