Exuma Colours are ALIVE! 🪸

North Bay, Sampson Cay Exuma, The Bahamas is a living technicolour crossroads between the deep water of the Exuma Sound and the warm shallows of the Great Bahama Bank.

It is here where sand banks, seagrass meadows, coral reefs and mangroves all blend into each other providing rich habitat for many creatures.

These essential ecosystems are champions against climate change and vital to our Bahamian economy and wellbeing. Formed and grown over hundreds of years, they are sensitive to coastal development, and any impact must be carefully considered, because once they are gone, they could take lifetimes to return.

Yntegra plans to dredge in the North Bay for their proposed Rosewood Exuma development on Sampson Cay, despite an alternative location at the south end of the cay that would avoid this bay entirely.

The proposed service dock, dredging and seawall would negatively impact sea life and disrupt water flow, there has been no modelling or details published of how they would alter currents, sediment movement or shoreline stability.

The increased industrial traffic would also make the bay unsafe for the locals and visitors who use it.

Dredging on this scale has measured consequences elsewhere in The Bahamas and Caribbean. Beautiful North Bay could be left a shadow of what you see here today.

Their backyard. Their waters. Some of their first time seeing what’s beneath them. 🌊🪸🐠

For many of these students, this was their first time snorkeling in the Central Exuma Cays surrounding their home. With marine ecologist @alannahvellacott, they explored reefs and seagrass meadows, learned about the marine life they support, and even got to dive their own conch! 🐚🤿

They got to see firsthand what’s here, what’s at stake, and why it matters. Because you can’t protect what you’ve never had the chance to know.

The next generation of Exuma’s guardians is already here. 💙
