Today's #watchfamappreciation week post is for @talkingabouttime, aka "Sugar Steve" to his friends. It's true he's a theme host and therefore should probably be recused from these proceedings. On the other hand, my MBTI highlights a general contempt for rules and authority, so LFG.

Stephen takes some incredible, absolutely pro shots which I've long admired. In getting to know him a bit this past year I've been grateful for how open he is with his knowledge. Usually magicians don't want to tell you how their tricks work. Not so with Stephen. One trick he taught me is what I'm calling the magic puck. A regular schmuck like me puts a diffuser between the light source and his subject and notices two things. All the light is nice and soft, and the crystal looks like it was smeared with Vaseline. Now you take the magic puck (can be anything from a lens cap to a jelly donut) and you move it around the diffuser (just laid on top so no extra hands or stands needed) until you find where it casts a shadow on the crystal. With some fine tuning you can dial in the perfect flecto and get just enough light on the hands to keep the comment section civilized. See the second shot for what it looks like without the magic puck. 🤢🤮 And see the final frame for an @EnthusedDad style BTS showing the wax on, wax off in real time.

There's one other technique I learned from Stephen which merits a round of applause. Back in March I went to Dallas for the Windup Watch Fair. When I showed up the line was probably 100 yards long (let's call it a km) and not moving. The venue was already full and it was one in one out. I did some quick math and estimated I'd be inside by late August. Just about then Stephen texts and says "when you get here, walk straight to the front and tell them you are press". I can has pressberger? Turns out yes, I can has. They wrote "watchberger" on a press badge and let me right in. There was actually a second line inside and I got to pass all those boobs too. That's as close to VIP treatment as I'm likely to get anytime soon. Thanks man!

On International Watch Details Appreciation Day I am calling attention to the little serif hour markers on my 16710. I still can't see them IRL, but this photo confirms they are there, and I love them.
