Where are you; where am I? How do we orient ourselves in relation to one another? 🌟NORTH STAR: A Movement Workshop 📅Monday, Nov 2nd from 10am-12pm 📍Arts Research Center, Hearst Field Annex D23 🔗Click the link in bio to learn more! ARC presents NORTH STAR: A Movement Workshop hosted by interdisciplinary artist, writer, and ARC Open Rehearsal Artist-in-Residence Steffani Jemison (@steffanijemison). ABOUT THE WORKSHOP: In dialogue with the children’s game “Marco Polo”—in which players with closed eyes orient themselves in response to sound and voice—Jemison will lead participants through a series of playful prompts connecting perspective, movement, language, and relation through guided improvisation. Gameplay will be preceded by a somatic warm-up and will integrate theory, fiction, and poetry; references may include Dionne Brand and Tyrone S. Palmer alongside Quincy Troupe. The workshop is suitable for anyone interested in testing contact, entanglement, and antagonism through lived experience; it might resonate particularly with creative writers, theorists, and performing artists. MEET THE ARTIST: Steffani Jemison is an interdisciplinary artist and writer. In dialogue with interlocutors (living and ancestral), her work connects mark-making, gesture, projection, movement, and document. Please join us on Saturday, October 17 from 2–4pm for 'White paper full of white writing¹: On art and text with Jasmin Benward (writeonjas), Lily Jue Sheng (@lilyjshhh), Nat Pyper (@natpyper), and Allie Tsubota (@aatsubo) moderated by Steffani Jemison (@steffanijemison).' With practices spanning photography, film, music, and performance, each of the artists turns to writing as a central component of their work, and as a means of storytelling, speculation, seduction, revelation, disclosure, political insurgency, and all actions in between. Moderated by Steffani Jemison, artist and co-founder of at Louis Place (@atlouisplace), the conversation will draw on the ethos of the at Louis Place Artist Publishing Cohort—a fellowship in which the artists all took part between 2025-2026—to center thinking and writing in community as a liberatory practice that activates networks across traditional creative and intellectual silos. The artists will share excerpts from recent and ongoing works before collectively discussing the relationship between writing and artmaking in their practices. This reading and conversation is being held on the occasion of Allie Tsubota’s solo exhibition, 'Milk Teeth,' on view at BAXTER ST through November 11, 2026. For more information and to RSVP, visit the link in our bio! Image: Installation view of 'Milk Teeth' by Allie Tsubota.
