Another great week at Stephen Procter Studios, working on another large sculpture. Did a terrible job documenting this piece, but this definitely went the smoothest of any of these large works that I’ve done so far. It was nice having a little extra time to go back and rework things I wasn’t happy with, like chopping off the neck and redoing it. Very happy with how it turned out. #sculpture #ceramics #throwingbig #thrownonaskutt #skuttwheels

been trying to get this feeling back when I throw

this pot sits in my office & stares at me waiting to be glazed and fired

a constant reminder of my ambition, creativity and also slight procrastination

A week in Vermont, a wheel, big balls of clay, and an idea.

I came into Stephen Proctor’s workshop @stephen.procter.studios with the support of Les Dames ATX @austindames and a goal: learn how to make large amphorae to ferment and age my wines.

I expected to struggle. I expected mistakes. I expected there would be things that just wouldn’t click. And I decided that was okay. If I learned even one thing, the experience would be worth it.

Well… I’m leaving not only completing my goal of making a large pot (~80lbs), but also with whole notebook full of lessons, techniques, artists recs, books recs, questions, ideas, and a completely different way of thinking about my work.

One question that really stuck with me was:

“What are the verbs of your pots?”

I don’t think I have the answer yet. But I’ve started thinking less about what my pots do and more about what I want them to make someone feel, remember, notice, or experience. The gesture it provides in a space.

I came into this project thinking about an amphora as a just a vessel for my wines.

This week reminded me that a vessel can also have a voice and speak more to the wines.

So I’m leaving Vermont with more than a completed goal. I’m leaving with a desire to make more room for the artist in myself and see where that takes me.

I guess the next part is finding out.

Thank you, Stephen, Les Dames ATX and thank you to everyone I had the pleasure of learning along side this week. 🤎🏺 @adrienneash_

Well I’ve hinted at it a bit in my stories, but I’ve spent the last week doing a residency with Stephen Procter in his studio in VT. I’m struggling to put into words what an incredible and surreal experience this has been, but to say I have learned a lot would be a complete understatement, both from Steve and his studio assistant Alex Bernius. Not only is Steve an extraordinarily gifted teacher, he is also an incredibly kind and gracious person. Those of you who know me, know I’ve been working towards throwing larger for a while now, and just having the opportunity to work in a space designed for large scale work, access to good clay and a big kiln has been invaluable. Very grateful for a new friend and mentor, and looking forward to whatever comes next! #pottery #ceramics #sculpture #throwingbig #ceramicsculpture

I made this pot at a week long workshop in Vermont with the wonderful and very talented @Stephen.procter.studios

This is the first time I have made a large sectional pot and man was it fun! I imagine by Stephens standards this one would still be pretty small compared to the massive pieces he often creates, but for me it was a challenge and I learned a lot.

I created this one in three pieces, each section weighing around 20 - 25 lbs. My goal here was to explore a few different forms during the five days I was there, so I didn’t want to too big. I managed to create three different pieces and I think this one was my favourite.

This piece was a combination of something resembling a traditional Korean form and for the final surface treatment, inspiration from @su.polyakova.

Needless to say it was a rewarding and expanding experience for me, the first thing I did when I got home was buy a torch. Big plans for more big pots are brewing.
