Tomorrow we’re hosting Dock 6 Design & Art 17! This annual, FREE event was conceived of over 15 years ago when Edra had the brilliant idea to curate an art exhibition at our shop, then located at 4200 W Diversey. Dock 6 Collective was still very much in its infancy, and the first Design & Art event transformed an unremarkable (but fun) open house to an unqualified success, practically becoming an overnight institution.
.
In recent years I’ve made the most of it by showing my guitars, in addition to chairs or tables or whatever else Navillus may have passing through the shop. I’m still getting used to thinking of myself as a luthier, but in 5 years or so I’ve built 25 electric guitars, 4 basses and and an acoustic so perhaps its time to say the shoe fits. Typically late nights and weekends hours precede the show but hey thats what qualifies as fun, right?
.
Every build is an experiment, of sorts. There are little goofs and anomalies and unplanned happy accidents on all of them and thats the way it goes! The standard of fit and finish on guitars, even cheap student models is perfection and I probably have to build another 25 guitars before meeting that mark. But thats OK!
.
So come on by between 2-8 tomorrow and I’ll hand you a guitar and take your pic. Wander around our 50k sq ft shop and appreciate the contributions of 50 artists and designers. Have a (free) beer order a piece of pizza from the truck, enjoy the music of DJs Catie O and Pluto and live music by Chad Kouri and Pink Frost! Yeah!
