“But even if he does not…” Daniel‬ ‭3‬:‭18‬ ‭NIV‬‬

That sentence took my breath away.

I will never forget when God told me to stop IVF, to stop chasing man and to give it all to Him. The amount of times I have prayed in the waiting and said “if this isn’t the month or the year, that’s ok, I trust your timing and I trust you”.

In Daniel 3, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to bow down and worship King Nebuchadnezzar’s golden statue. In anger, the king threatened to throw them into the fiery furnace. I love their response to him in verses 16-18:

““Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.””
‭‭Daniel‬ ‭3‬:‭16‬-‭18‬ ‭NIV‬‬

They knew the cost and they also knew the God they served. In the face of conformity and what lay ahead and they chose to be obedient no matter the cost, even if it meant their death. That faith and that devotion… would we do the same in the face of confrontation or knowing that hardship is ahead.

@stevefosterldn @staldatesoxford shared in the sermon that sometimes He saves us from the fire and sometimes He stands with us in the fire.

We have to trust His heart, even when we can’t see His hand.

Can we say “But even if he does not…”

We serve the same God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He is the same God with the same power and might as He did then. I wonder how our actions, beliefs, and thoughts would change if we fully believed that, stepped into our identity as children’s of God and walked in the power that lives in us through the Holy Spirit.

11/10/26. The cautionary verse of the plank and the speck. How often we make snap judgements about people without looking at our own faults and flaws. We might see a small thing in someone else and fail to see our own enormous obvious flaw that sticks out like a sore thumb or in this case, a plank of wood. But the clearer we see our own faults, the more willing we are to forgive others, maybe because we see how much we need forgiveness! #sermondoodle #dailydoodle #sundaychurchday #christianencouragement #gospelmusic @staldatesoxford @stevefosterldn

07/09/26. @staldatesoxford sermon doodles on Acts 12. Peter is in prison facing certain death. Everyone is earnestly praying for his rescue. But Peter sleeps… even when an angel appears. Perhaps he doesn’t think the prayers will be answered. The angel has to give him a whack to wake up 😂, as @stevefosterldn said “God can send an angel but he’s not going to get you dressed… you have to take action”. So we partner with God in response to prayer - we may be given the opportunity but we have to respond with boldness and courage. #biblehumor #christianencouragement #dailydoodle #gospelmusic #bibledoodles

06/09/26. @staldatesoxford 21 days of prayer kicked off by our pastor @stevefosterldn. He said “the acid test on what we believe about God is how we pray”. Do we believe it will make a difference? Do we trust? Are we ready to take action? Because prayer is a partnership that requires a bold response. #prayer #christianencouragement #sundaychurch #dailydoodle #gospelmusic @gasstreetmusic

524 - When Wonder Fades

Simon shares about what it means to rediscover our first love for Jesus. Sometimes our love for God hasn’t been deliberately rejected, it’s simply faded through familiarity, weariness or the busyness of life. But as Simon returned to the Gospels and asked the Holy Spirit to awaken his heart again, he found himself amazed by Jesus afresh. Because the Spirit still comes to breathe life into what has grown tired, and to ignite our love for Him again.

Simon Ponsonby is an author, theologian, and speaker based in Oxford, where he is the Director of Theology at St Aldates, Oxford. Simon has written several books on spiritual life and biblical theology, including Amazed by God, More, and Inside Out. Simon is married to Tiffany with two sons, Joel and Nat.
