There is an overwhelming amount of evidence that art - looking, engaging, and creating - actively improves mental health by reducing stress hormones, boosting mood-enhancing brain chemicals, serving as a non-verbal outlet. Addressing trauma through images helps reshape neural pathways and fosters long-term emotional resilience.

Hats off to @_hospitalrooms, who understand this. After visiting a friend who was sectioned in a mental hospital, partners and co-founders @niamhmwhite and @timadamshaw - curator and artist, respectively - witnessed how dire the environment was and sought to change it. Ten years on, they are celebrating incredible accomplishments: their arts and mental health charity has realised 32 projects nationwide, installing 222 permanent artworks across 65 wards and commissioning 360 artists to contribute to its work. More than 5,000 art workshops have taken place in some of the most restrictive mental health settings, and its Digital Art School has delivered art programmes and materials to every mental health hospital in England over the past three years.

It was a privilege to view some of the art which has been created within mental health hospitals and wards in ‘Host/Guest’, installed at @victoriamirogallery, with the works headed to a live auction @bonhams1793 on 17 Sept. Was also a privilege to hear White speak with @misskatywick and @purebred.mongrel about the charity and to learn that Hospital Rooms has drafted the National Framework for Equal Access to Mental Health Services. Published in 2027, the charity will open source its curatorial methodology for leading creative interventions in mental health services.

For its ‘10 Posters for 10 Years’, the charity is offering time-limited sales of A2 posters. Today is your last chance to buy posters from the second round available, by artists Jules de Balincourt, Chantal Joffe, Celia Paul, and Grayson Perry.

Thrilled to have caught the final day of Host | Guest at @victoriamirogallery — celebrating 10 years of the brilliant arts and mental health charity @_hospitalrooms and the extraordinary work they do bringing art into NHS mental health spaces.
Especially lovely to see @rbyrneblack and her beautiful new work Paracosm Kingdom (2026), made during her residency at @vermontstudiocenter. 💫

The exhibition now travels to @bonhams1793, where the works will be on view 15–16 September, ahead of the auction closing on 17 September. All works have been generously donated by the artists, with proceeds supporting Hospital Rooms — and Bonhams is taking no buyer’s or seller’s premium.

A few weeks ago I attended a Folio Day @thephotographersgallery where I was able to share my Project; "Living Vintage: Echoes of the Past through a 21st Century Lens" and get feedback on it. Yikes!

I had been wanting to book on to this day for ages and was very excited when I got a spot, but I had no idea what to expect.

Turns out it was a really relaxed day, where we first had a couple of presentations by one of the gallery's curators, Taous Dahmani and a pro photographer/mentor Steve Macleod.

Then we were invited to set up our allocated table (I went to to grab a delicious coffee from the downstairs café using my new membership discount 🙌) and mingle with each other until they were able to come and see us individually.

It was so much fun and so supportive. I met some other great photographers, (had to take a few snaps of some of them of course!) received blushingly 😊 lovely compliments on my work and lots of great insights from the two experts.

The event was facilitated by Janice McClaran, Head of Education & Projects at The Photographers' Gallery who couldn't have been more helpful and kind. On top of all of that we got sarnies and fruit too 😋.

I highly recommend giving the day a go if you've a photo project, you want feedback on. How lucky are we to have this in London?

Right!
It’s been a long while. Three months! Dec-Feb… What happened??
Well…
I guess this ‘Be Present’ app thing really works because every time I go on Insta, it gets shut down within minutes. Meaning I get a quick peek at you all, and then, poof! You’re gone! So every time I’ve gone to post something, i get kicked off before I can finish. So I end up giving up.
Probably a good thing, huh… (except my new habit to quieten my mind is Sudoko, and I’m now playing Killer every day when I would have been scrolling! #transference
—
Here goes:
Dec/Christmas was full of Earley’s and Hickey’s, a fabulous wedding in Derry, art and walks and lots of fun!
January carried on in pretty much the same vein, quieter though, but with windy wet Kerry walks and some birthdays thrown in for good measure. Seeing shows and friends is the BEST part of London life!
At work I’ve been working with ACTUAL MEN. I know. Shocker! Loving the UAL DESIS lab gang and all our reflection, mapping and planning sessions. (LinkedIn is where I post on work things now, if you’re interested, and a bit about textiles over on my other Insta account).
The kids - now too big to be called that, but y’know, they still are even though they tower over us - have been gloriously present too. Along with their beaus and pals. So there’s been a lot of food and alcohol provision here these last three months. Feeding them up so they can do their thing in style. Which they do. #smashingit
Walking at dusk and admiring paths and doors. A strange hobby, I know. But try it! (Apologies if one of these is yours 🤣🤭)
—
That’s all really. Life, love, work, living.
Oh - and the last pic. Which basically means we are not doing great at tackling climate change. So this remains the constant anxiety in all our lives, along with war, politics, greed, injustice. It’s not cheery. And I don’t buy into aimless optimising… we all need to wise up and push for change.
—
Please do it however you can, with whatever means and skills you have.
—
(And don’t forget to chill too. I can recommend Sudoko!! Rear-windowing. And Negronis! 🤣)

I see that the Sumo wrestling was back in London recently. These images were taken when they were last here in 1991 at the Albert Hall. I was working for the papers and what a joy for all UK photographers to get the chance to photograph something so different (beat football on a cold week day evening which I hated and wasn't very good at). I was really exploring b/w with different printing techniques with my pal @stevemac65 at @metroimaging everybody thought I was nuts. The great photographer Chris Cole bagged the shot at this event and put everybody else's pic's literally in the shadows. These images have never seen I love 34years later. #sumo #sumowrestling #sport #tradition #art #shapes #blackandwhite #power #muscle #nikon #blackandwhitephotography #35mm #film #hp5 #ilford
