It’s been about a week since we closed The King James Bible play at @stratfest 🍍

Hard to put into words, even though it’s a play about words, how much this production has meant to me. It’s a huge play about huge things and also achingly personal. These actors were the best translators, their rigour, the way they brought themselves to the work, was unparalleled.

Nina @nla.et.nac my extraordinary director and theatre wife brought my world to life in every way possible and I couldn’t have done it without my extraordinary dramaturges @keeferbarker & @martinekei

Our incredible team: designers @dreadfishead @lxq42 & @gzapper, stage managers @erikadmorey Lily and May, backstage crew and house managers, went above and beyond. Everyone worked together on this one. I am so grateful.

We had a sold out run in Stratford and now we’re heading to the NAC in Ottawa November 11-21st. If you weren’t able to catch us this summer, get your NAC tickets now because there are only three shows left that aren’t sold out.

I’d love to share this one with you ✨

Tonight, A Midsummer Night's Dream comes to an end.🌜✨
Directed by Graham Abbey, Shakespeare's beloved comedy has enchanted audiences with a production that "sounds immediate and current, the gags topical and fresh... Talk about a dream" (The Globe and Mail).

"With a phenomenal cast and inventive design" (BroadwayWorld), this joyful production embraced the heart and humour of the play, making it "consistently, genuinely and uproariously funny" (Postmedia).

As this midsummer dream drifts into memory, we celebrate the many individuals whose talent and imagination made the magic possible. 🧚‍♀️

Also got to see Shakespeare's Othello tonight! We were lucky enough to get to do a workshop this morning with Irene Poole on some text from Othello and it was a very useful session on how iamic pentameter works in Shakespeare's texts. We also got to ask one of the actors a few questions after the show André Sills @dre373 while we were waiting for the bus which is always a pleasure to hear what they have to say about the industry and how they got to where they are.

At this year's Festival, two new Canadian works are finding fresh meaning in texts from the distant past.
Next Magazine spoke with Charlotte Corbeil-Coleman, playwright of The King James Bible Play, and Jovanni Sy 施崇梵, playwright and director of The Tao of the World, about the ideas and inspirations behind their plays.

The King James Bible Play explores the monumental translation of the first authorized English Bible by a group of 17th-century men, juxtaposing it with a group of present-day women attempting to translate that history for the stage. The idea came to Charlotte when she learned that:

"The King James Bible, while being this very religious text, actually changed the English language in a lot of ways. So many things that we say now came out of that version of the text. Words create thoughts, and thoughts create action. It's a really important text to investigate because it has had a profound influence on the English language and, as a result, on the way English speakers think."

Similarly, The Tao of the World draws inspiration from a centuries-old text. In 2021, after being asked to direct a comedy that might help lift audiences' spirits following the pandemic, Jovanni initially considered William Congreve's Restoration comedy The Way of the World. He soon realized that reimagining the play in a contemporary context could make its themes resonate with modern audiences:

"We’re all fascinated today with shows like The White Lotus, which are purportedly satirical, or even ‘comedies of manners,’” Jovanni observes, “but I question whether they really are. The joke is that they all behave horribly and selfishly, and in the end, they’re never held to account for any of their actions... the message is, ‘Well, that’s just the way the world works’ … that’s the way of the world, if you will."

He adds that: "this is my anti-White Lotus play. If we’re going to do a comedy of manners that calls people out for their behaviour, let’s [actually] call them out for their behaviour."

Both shows run until September 26.

So grateful to have been invited to the first dress rehearsal of Tao of the World at Stratford Festival! What an absolute joy from beginning to end. 👏👏🎉🎉

This is a must-see show—hilarious, heartfelt, and so brilliantly written. I was laughing the whole time! It totally reminded me of the fun, fast-paced energy of Crazy Rich Asians.

Huge congratulations to Jovanni on writing such a wonderful play and for his outstanding direction. Bravo! And to Agnes, Angus, Derek, and Nestor—you were all absolutely incredible. Congratulations to the entire cast and creative team on such a fantastic production.

It also felt like a mini Salesman in China reunion, which made the evening even more special. ❤️

A special thank you for the beautiful autographed Salesman in China script—I will treasure it.

Wishing everyone a fantastic run. Break a leg, and I can’t wait for our next reunion in 2027. Bravo, everyone! 👏🎭
