Last night, Devon’s Labour MPs met with the Prime Minister to discuss Devon Devo Now, our campaign for greater devolution in Devon.

We want the maximum powers and funding for our county. This includes a Mayor for Devon, which will bring exciting opportunities for our communities to have greater local control over transport, housing, and key public services. It is vital that devolution in Devon proceeds at the same pace as in other parts of the South West.

Local government reorganisation will play a crucial role in turning these ambitions into reality, and we look forward to seeing further progress on this in the near future.

We are grateful to the Prime Minister for taking the time to discuss this with us. We would be delighted to take him up on his offer to visit Devon and see more of what our beautiful county has to offer.

Some of our September highlights! 🌹 ✨

We attended Labour Party conference in Liverpool, getting to meet the Prime Minister and speak to him about our city, as well as listen to his first conference speech as PM, which outlined:

👵 Plans for a new National Care Service
💧 Greater public control of water, housing and energy
🇪🇺 Restarting the conversation on Europe
🗳️ A commission on electoral reform

The Prime Minister at the South West reception, talking about our region and delivering good growth to every postcode, including the South West🌹🇬🇧

Our councillors and MP have been working hard for their communities including:

🌷 New planters in Beacon Heath, sprucing up the shop area
🗑️ Securing more regular dog waste collections
🌊 Looking at pollution levels in the River Exe
🌳 Visiting Mincinglake Valley Park to look at recovery since the wildfire in the summer

🚪 We spoke to over 500 residents on the doorstep this month, picking up local issues that they might have

Your Labour-led Exeter City Council continues to deliver for you, including:

🏡 Next phase of Whipton Gardens development started, building new, high-quality and warm council homes for Exeter residents
🗣️ Launched tenants’ voice survey for those living in council homes throughout the city
🏙️ Launched the five year city strategy that is focused on making the city greener, safer and a more enjoyable place to live
🌊 Celebrated World Rivers Day with the West Country Rivers Trust, Trews Weir Fishery, Friends of the River Exe, and Tidelines
💧 Started working on expanding access to water throughout the city

Speaking in Parliament, @steveracemp challenged the scientific reliability of animal testing and argued that better alternatives are already available.

What a whirlwind Labour Conference! 🌹

It was wonderful to catch up with so many excellent colleagues and friends at Labour Conference, including too many inspiring conversations to count! My diary highlights included:

-2 panels on improving homes for our service people and their families. 🏠
- LGBT Foundation brunch with Fighting with Pride and the Terrance Higgins Trust.
- Speeches for UKSpace & Obsidian Labour.
- Panels with King’s College London on “Defence and Security in an uncertain world” and the Coalition for Global Prosperity on “Security in a Fragmented World: Rethinking Defence and Development”. 🌍
- Engagement with a dozen innovative Defence startups.
- A catch-up event for Leyton and Wanstead CLP members.
- Discussions with Ambassadors and High Commissioners, including those from Japan, Canada, Australia, France, Denmark, and my good friend, HE the High Commissioner of Zambia. 🇿🇲
- Being in the Conference Hall to hear powerful speeches from PM Jonas Gahr Støre of Norway, Defence Secretary Wes Streeting, Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, and of course our PM Andy Burnham. 🌹
- Filming of interviews to raise awareness of issues around veterans’ access to healthcare with the excellent @doctorazmain and @doctordevify 🩺
- Meetings with Help for Heroes, the ONE Campaign, and the housing association Stonewater on employing veterans and addressing veteran homelessness.
- Receptions: Labour Friends of the Forces, Ukraine, NATO, and the Labour African Network. 🇺🇦

At @uklabour Party Conference we’re continuing an important conversation about where global hunger and malnutrition sit within the UK’s approach to security.

Speaking at the RUSI launch of UAMH’s report, commissioned from the LSE, From Hunger to Instability: Why Global Hunger Matters for UK Security, Labour MP @steveracemp reflected on the links between hunger, instability and UK national security.

The report sets out evidence showing how food insecurity can contribute to wider instability and conflict, and makes the case for a more joined-up approach across development, diplomacy and security.

As political leaders gather for the Labour Party Conference, this is a conversation that must remain on the agenda.
