For this episode of Tabor Neighbors, Michael and Naomi Hamann share how Tabor Dance brought them together—first through movement, then through chalk art, a little recreational mathematics, and Michael’s habit of writing hundreds of digits of pi across the pavement. 💫

What began as a chance encounter became a relationship, a marriage, and a shared love of turning math into something colorful, creative, and open to everyone. Their chalk drawings and magic squares invite people to stop, wonder, and rediscover the simple pleasure of playing with numbers.

That spirit continues at piological.com, where Michael and Naomi are developing the “Miomi Magic Square Puzzle Book.” As they put it: “We believe math should feel like play, not a chore. Our resources spark curiosity and keep smiles wide.” 🧮🌈

We’re grateful to Michael and Naomi for sharing their story and bringing their wonderfully playful curiosity to the mountain. Let’s keep dancing, drawing, discovering, and making room for joy together. ✨

For this episode of Tabor Neighbors we talk to Cory Poole — aka @robotopdx, the man behind the famous DISCO STAFF we all know and love. 🪩🕺 🤖

What started as a light he could carry while skateboarding eventually became something much bigger: a moving landmark, a meeting point, and a beacon of joy that our community gathers around on the dance floor.

Anyone who has experienced it knows, when the Disco Staff comes out, the dance floor vibes change in a very tangible way. People stop looking only toward the DJ and start looking at each other. The dance floor becomes less about a stage and more about the people sharing the space. In a very real way, the Disco Staff lights up the spaces between us, allowing us to come closer together as a community.

Cory (Roboto) is a case study into what makes this scene so different from a concert in the park. Attendees at a concert are there to experience an event. At Tabor Dance, our attendees ARE the event. The experience is made up of each and every one of us, bringing our true selves to light up the night together. 💜

Community care doesn’t stop at the edge of the dance floor. 💗

Kristina’s work in harm reduction began with DanceSafe, a national nonprofit best known for supporting safer nightlife and festival culture. But she wanted to see that work take root closer to home.

So she started bringing her booth to events around Portland — showing up wherever organizers were willing to make safety, education and support part of the experience.

At Tabor Dance, that spirit feels especially at home. Harm reduction here isn’t treated as an afterthought or a response to something going wrong. It’s part of a broader culture of being proactive: looking out for one another, sharing information, making resources available, caring for the park, and creating a space where people of all ages can come together. 🫶🌲💃

You can find Kristina at the DanceSafe booth, on the mountain, through the rest of our outdoor dance season!

🌿 Out of the quiet, we found our rhythm. 💫

For this Tabor Neighbors interview, Daniel Kahn reflects on the early days of Tabor Dance—when gathering outdoors offered a rare sense of freedom, movement, and connection during an isolating time.

What began as a small response to separation gradually took on a life of its own. People returned, brought friends, shared music, and helped shape a joyful Portland tradition that continues to grow and evolve.

The dance reminds us that sometimes the things we need most begin simply: a place to gather, a reason to move, and the chance to feel part of something bigger than ourselves. 💚

Heartfelt gratitude for everyone who made the pilgrimage up the volcano and helped turn a community need into bona fide movement. Let’s keep dancing, caring for the park, and making room for joy on the dance floor. ✨

🌿 Community is built one dance at a time. 💫

At our Moonlit Creatures dance on 7/29, we chatted with longtime community member Shannon Champagne @faefoxgremlin to talk about what makes Tabor Dance so special — and what it means to have an accessible place where people can show up, connect, and know that there’s room for you.

Over the years, Tabor Dance has become more than music and movement. It’s a community shaped by the people who return week after week, connecting with old friends, welcoming new faces, and co-creating joy. 💚

We’re grateful to everyone who has helped build this community and keep the movement alive. ✨
