12 years ago I started @we_are_explorers on the smell of an oily rag and an ungodly level of optimism. Today is my last day. Mental. What a ripper adventure it's been turning a scrappy little blog into Australia's biggest baddest adventure media company.

So many mega memories made along the way and they've all been formed around the wonderful people who've entered my orbit since I hit send. Thank you to you all for being part of the journey.

My last year living in Australia… my last year in my 20s.
Life was all about surfing, smiling and sipping on champagne. Not too much has changed then… ☃️🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒🤪

I hear this from too many founders. Lazy ones.

There's was a seriously squiggly feeling in the depths of my belly.

But how would you know?

It poses lots of questions, but it doesn't answer any.

You can't see how I *feel* in these images...

Having to wake up a 4am, drive 2 hours to Sapporo 🗻 to pick up surf boards, drive 3 hours in the opposite direction to get to the beach, filling up out hot-water bottles in 7/11 convenience store, getting lost in an industrial estate.

The conversations we had in the car that made us crease up with tears, the feeling of sheer joy 🤣 when we turned up at the surf spot we'd been scoping out for weeks.

Giggling swigs of whisky, toes frozen getting changed in knee-deep snow.

I’m Melanie, and this is my story of surfing through cancer.

Two and a half years ago, I was diagnosed with stage IV ovarian cancer.
I thought the goal was to survive.
Now I think the goal is to live while I can—and love as much as I can along the way.

This real is radical acceptance of our own mortality. A terminal diagnosis is a gift, because I have time to invest in what will remain when I’m gone.

This real is an expression of gratitude.
For the extra mornings. The soft laughter. The kissed he pretends to wipe off. The 5am tickles.
The time I never should’ve had… and wouldn’t trade for anything.

Every moment, worth it.
Every moment, held.
