There is nothing better than a solo adventure in a beautiful, ancient city with no timelines or distractions 🥹 I spent today wandering the historic streets of Valletta. From the cannon battery at noon to a *remarkable* strawberry gelato from @tiffanysgelateria to the ABSOLUTELY stunning St. John’s Co Cathedral - it was one marvel after another! I ended the day at the Triton Fountain soaking in the sun. Tomorrow is my birthday and I can’t think of a sweeter way to ring it in than with a day like today 💕

As part of the Summer Placement study unit of the Master of Conservation (Easel Paintings) programme, final-year student Andrea Luca Bartolo undertook his placement with the St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation in Valletta @stjohnscocathedral .

Andrea contributed to the conservation of two paintings in the care of the Foundation: the 1622 altarpiece depicting the Nativity of the Virgin from Ta’ Savina Church, Victoria, Gozo, and an early eighteenth-century lunette depicting the Martyrdom of St Agatha by Giuseppe D’Arena, from the Jesuit Church, Valletta. Across the two paintings, his work included structural treatments, cleaning, infilling, varnishing, retouching and photographic documentation.

The Department of Conservation and Built Heritage at UM would like to thank Mr Tonio Mallia, CEO; Ms Adriana Alescio, Chief Conservator and Curatorial Officer; and conservators Ms Gema San Gregorio Guijarro and Ms Pilar Rodriguez for their collaboration on this placement.

The Co-Cathedral of St John the Baptist houses two remarkable Caravaggio paintings: the vast and dramatic ‘The Beheading of St John the Baptist’ (1608) and the more contemplative, ‘St Jerome Writing’ (1607 - 1608). Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio, arrived in Malta fleeing a murder trial in Rome, with a bad reputation. Commissioned by the Order of the Knights of St John and inducted into the Order, he trusted that this elevation would help to secure his immunity. This situation was short-lived when he became involved in a brawl with another member of the Order. He was imprisoned, escaped, but was eventually bought before the Knights in the Cathedral Oratory to be disclaimed and “expelled and thrust forth like a rotten and fetid limb” from the Order, beneath his completed masterpiece. What a painting! Caravaggio even had the audacity to scrawl his signature, Fra Michelangelo, in red, in the blood seeping from the sliced-open gash in the Baptist’s throat. As @cobwebeyes said a few days ago when the painting was discussed, “He was a naughty boy”!

St. John’s Co-Cathedral, Valletta. Splendour was piled upon splendour by the Langues and Grandmasters of the Knights Hospitallers, (the order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem). Truly a breathtaking spectacle of High Baroque.
