Students threw a plankton net into Lake Fred and pulled the muddy sample ashore. They got a closer look at the creatures that crawl beneath the surface with microscopes 🔬 in the lab. SCI-BOOST, a student group for first-year science majors, spent the semester building a community through mentorship, field activities, collaborative projects and networking. What can you do now that it's dark by 5 p.m.? If you haven't been to the Harold E. Taylor Observatory 🔭 yet, this is your sign to go stargazing. The next viewing night is Nov. 21, 7-9:30 p.m. The Observatory is located at the Intramural Fields off Pomona Road.

We had such a fun Marine Operations Day this past Wednesday ⚓️🪢🌊 Thanks everyone for coming out and learning about boat safety, nautical knots, handling lines, marine technology, boat operations and more!!! We wanna give a huge thanks to Steve, Nate, Liz and Dave for always supporting us students and giving us the best experiences during our educational careers! They always go above & beyond to make sure we are all taken care of and ready to take on the “real world” after we graduate. We appreciate you all so much! If you missed this Marine Ops Day, don’t worry! We will be having another one with the Marine Science Club next year, so keep your eyes peeled for emails, group me messages & insta posts in order to know what’s going on!!

We’re helping to spread the word for our local marine scientist, Dr. Dana Christensen. Dana is a graduate of @stockton.dssa and @templeuniv. Dana’s project, “Bridging the Gap Between Recreational Anglers and Researchers,” which she presented at the @cmpsciencecenter Marine Science Symposium, is focused on understanding the motivations, preferences, and concerns of New Jersey’s saltwater anglers. Through a short, voluntary survey, Dana is gathering valuable insights anonymously from anglers to help shape the future of conservation. A wonderful weekend on the American Star! Fall migration is one of our favorite times of year. We observed a Humpback whale, inshore and offshore Bottlenose dolphins, and many migrating butterflies and birds! Our participants took the time to divide and conquer the breadth of proposed lab manual and python tools we brainstormed yesterday. Today and tomorrow is all about activity development! And of course, every good working session needs a good break and team-building exercise! For us, that was cupcake decorating!🧁 For an extra challenge, participants explained their approach to data literacy with their cupcake. 😁 They also took the time to discuss their action plan over dinner in Princeton. Laila Abdelbary loves fashion and the planet, but they don't always coexist. "The fashion industry is one of the top polluting industries in the world, and I’m passionate about changing that," she said. She's making change and inviting the Ospreys to join her with thrifting events on campus. Students can shop or swap secondhand and upcycled clothing. "I like to get people thinking. How we change our shopping could make a big difference on this planet," she said. Laila also has her own sustainable fashion brand @lonelilyreworks where she recycles clothes into new designs. Shop for styles with a purpose at upcoming events on Oct. 18 and Nov. 20 at the @NoyesArtsGarage and Nov. 7 at @StocktonAC.
