Pilot safety alert for the Pacific Northwest. Mount St. Helens is not erupting, but strong winds on Thursday picked up loose ash from the 1980 eruption and carried it to around 12,000 feet, drifting northwest. USGS kept the volcano at normal levels, but resuspended ash is still hazardous to aircraft engines and to your lungs. If you’re flying GA or drones in southwest Washington or northwest Oregon, check current SIGMETs and USGS volcano notices before you launch. Fly smart and look out for each other.

Let’s save lives.

Buying or building an airplane is too important a decision to make from a screen alone. Come meet the people behind the aircraft, ask the detailed questions and see what fits your mission at the Affordable Flying Expo. November 13–15. https://affordableflying.net

Fuelled up and away.

A stunning day to fly, so my brother-in-law @rupertgibsonphotography came along with his camera and we went to find the North Norfolk coast at its best. Big skies, golden sand and the Husky doing what it does so well… low n’ slow.

On the way back, a stop at Fenland, my go-to pit stop for fuel, a cuppa and cake, before heading home.

This is what STOL flying looks like when nobody’s measuring the take-off roll: a capable @huskyaircraft, good company and a coastline worth the trip.

Competition days are brilliant, but days like this are why we do it.

Shirt on, naturally. 👕 @stolukofficial

Happy National Aviation Day! Few things are as much fun as the grass strip in Paradise City during Sun ‘n Fun. Seen here is Jared Garetson taking off in a Backcountry Super Cub for the STOL Invitational! 📷 Nikon Z6.3 : Tamron 35-150 : ISO-100 : f/8 : 1/400 shutter 📷
