‼️TICKET GIVEAWAY‼️ This Saturday 11/9…Get ready folks, this is a big deal — it’s THE CATHEDRAL OF NEW EMOTIONS! On Saturday, November 9th, The Philosophical Research Society proudly presents the WORLD PREMIERE of the restoration of an utterly bonkers (and previously nearly utterly lost & unknown) psychedelic animated mindmelter! Because this *very* momentous occasion is NOT to be missed, we’re giving away some tix! What’s the trippiest movie you’ve ever seen? Let us know in the comments and/or tag a friend for a chance to win a pair of tickets!! On a shortlist with Eiichi Yamamoto’s BELLADONNA OF SADNESS and René Laloux’s FANTASTIC PLANET as one of the most surreal, psychedelic and truly cosmic animated features ever made, German director Helmut Herbst’s utterly insane THE CATHEDRAL OF NEW EMOTIONS follows a commune of Berlin stoners and intellectuals who get set adrift in space in 1972 in a packing container clutched in a giant flying hand. Various space flotsam smashes into the windshield – enormous insects, Mighty Mouse, a Bird Man from “Flash Gordon” – while hypnotic Krautrock drones in the background moaning “Where am I??”, and a naked man bounces up and down off a massive red pepper. So begins our descent down the psychotic rabbit hole of CATHEDRAL, a true hallucinogenic Space Freakout if there ever was one: imagine Ralph Bakshi animating an R-rated version of John Carpenter’s DARK STAR, or the cartoon equivalent of Can’s “Ege Bamyasi” or Pink Floyd’s “Astronomy Domine.” In other words: set the controls for the heart of the sun. Visually the film is like no other. One of the rarest and most obscure tiles in world animation and never before officially released, CATHEDRAL has been newly restored from the original camera negative and sound elements by Deaf Crocodile Films with the cooperation of Herbst’s wife, Renate Merck. Tuesday 10/29! As the most hallowed night in horror approacheth, Cinemancers beckons you to The Philosophical Research Society to experience their unholy October selection — a visually sumptuous, exceptionally eerie, gothic horror fantasy film like none other! A tale of witchcraft and desire! The first (and perhaps only full-on) horror film ever produced in the Soviet Union!: VIY (1967)! @bibliomancers @astraleyez Based on the classic novella by Nikolai Gogol – and previously adapted by Mario Bava as BLACK SUNDAY – the macabre masterpiece managed to make it past Soviet production restrictions thanks to its “folk tale” story and venerated source material. What resulted remains “genuinely frightening” (1001 Films You Must See Before You Die), “a visual grab bag of terror” (FilmInquiry.com) and “one of the best horror films of all time.” (IndieWire) In 19th century Russia, a seminary student is forced to spend three nights with the corpse of a beautiful young witch. But when she rises from the dead to seduce him, it will summon a nightmare of fear, desire and the ultimate demonic mayhem. Bursting with startling imagery and stunning practical effects (including a host of demons and the unforgettable titular monster!) by directors Konstantin Yershov and Georgi Kropachyov, this “overlooked classic” (Paste Magazine) has influenced generations of directors for more than half a century and is still unlike any horror movie you’ve ever seen! Rarely screened and underseen, this is a creepy cinematic marvel that demands to be seen on the big screen. Join PRS and Cinemancers as we summon the great VIY! Wednesday 9/4! Join us for the first event in our Surrealist Study Group (SSG)’s new series SURREALIST STUDY SCREENINGS, as we welcome Chloë Cassens, the representative of the Severin Wunderman Collection, the largest collection in the world of works by iconoclastic French artist Jean Cocteau, for an in depth conversation with dama – artist, curator, PRS librarian, and host of SSG – about Jean Cocteau’s incredible life and brilliant work, accompanying a screening of his revolutionary avant-garde classic THE BLOOD OF A POET (Le sang d’un poète) (1932). @chloecassens @amandamacielantunes The brains behind Sacred Monster, a project dedicated to educating the globe about Cocteau, and emissary of the Severin Wunderman Collection, whose collection makes up the entirety of the contents of the official Musée Jean Cocteau in France, Cassens is a longtime scholar of Cocteau with a unique perspective, as she is Wunderman’s granddaughter. This evening, she will illuminate us on Cocteau’s life and work, his relationship to the surrealist movement, and the creation and lasting impact of Cocteau’s groundbreaking first film, Le sang d’un poète. The Blood of a Poet, upon release, was extremely controversial; today, it’s one of the most important films in cinema history. Cassens and dama’s conversation will cover it all — you don’t want to miss it! Get your tickets now at prs.org/events! 🎥✨ Trailer by @stonefolk

Here it is…PRS’ original trailer for MORGIANA! This Thursday, 7/25 – @severinfilms beautiful, brand new restoration of Juraj Herz’s classic Czech new wave dark fairytale! The best known in the West of Slovak filmmaker Juraj Herz’s enchanting genre films (The Cremator (1969), Beauty and the Beast (1978), The Ninth Heart (1979) and Ferat Vampir (1982) among them), MORGIANA is about two sisters – neither of whom is named Morgiana, that’s the cat, who gets her own cat-cam – who are placed in opposition when one of them inherits the majority of their father’s estate. In a brilliantly affecting dual performance by actress Iva Janžurová, the raven-haired Viktorie contrives to poison her naive fair-haired sister Klara when she is driven mad with jealousy over both their financial predicament and Klara’s abundance of attention from possible suitors. As her sister becomes weaker and more prone to kaleidoscopic hallucinations, Viktorie’s flamboyance threatens to foil her own murderous plans. Bursting with extravagance – baroque garden parties, dramatic eye makeup, vintage tarot cards, fish-eye lenses – MORGIANA is absolutely breathtaking stuff and a fitting gateway to Herz’s brilliant ouevre.” (Kier-La Janisse, excerpted from House of Psychotic Women). Don’t miss your first chance to see Severin’s sumptuously saturated, gorgeous restoration of this wonderfully warped and wicked Czech classic! Tuesday 7/16! Bibliomancers return to PRS to celebrate the release of their new book OCCULT EYE, with a fascinating assemblage of film and music that journeys from ethereal fashion ephemera to the extremities of “sanity,” featuring an experimental film live score by sonic shadow lurker Mr. Pharmacist and culminating with a screening of Jane Arden’s incendiary experimental psychodrama THE OTHER SIDE OF THE UNDERNEATH (1972)! **Check out their trailer for their original, dreamy mix of vintage new-romantic fashion commercials, recontextualized with a cherrypicked soundtrack of übercool needle drops and be sure to swipe to see PRS’ original trailer for Arden’s incendiary masterwork!** Always eclectic, Bibliomancers’ program will use their mix of eyepoppingly avant garde advertisements as our jumping off point for a plunge from the allure and dazzle of mass-market beauty ideals to Arden’s fiercely feminist and unapologetically assaultive THE OTHER SIDE OF THE UNDERNEATH – one of cinema’s most disturbing and viscerally vital treatises on mental illness and the insidious, archaic diagnoses of “hysterical women.” And en route, sonic shadow lurker MR. PHARMACIST will shepherd us from dream to nightmare with the premiere a new musical score for an obscure experimental film, selected by Eric of Bibliomancers! Bibliomancers is a small press created and owned by the Los Angeles based occult collage artist Astraleyes. Working with his longtime friend & partner in crime, curator, designer & concept artist Eric Nordhauser they have created a series of esoteric themed books documenting their obsessions. @astraleyez @speedgallery666 @bibliomancers @mrpharmacist72 PRS Original “The Other Side of the Underneath” trailer by @stonefolk Get tix now at prs.org/events! ✨

Saturday 7/13! Are you ready for something truly epic? Do not miss this! Watch the trailer till the end to see what we mean 👀 The Philosophical Research Society is proud to present one of the most astounding and unusual science fiction epics ever made – visionary director Andrzej Żuławski’s legendary masterpiece ON THE SILVER GLOBE (1988)! Rarely screened, this momentous event will be preceded by the world premiere of acclaimed composer, multimedia practitioner, and information designer Gavin Gamboa’s audio/visual overture “W Srebrnym Planie (Within the Silver Plane),” a piece inspired by and fascinatingly integrating Żuławski’s mesmeric odyssey – created especially for this screening at PRS! Gamboa’s brilliant work “seeks to unpack, from a bird’s eye view, the entire film as a graphical tiled mosaic that becomes the DNA for an image-sonification performance making audible the frames themselves” and must be seen and heard to be believed! @gavcloud Get your tix now at prs.org/events! Wednesday June 26th — Join us for very special screenings of, Pat O’Neill’s THE DECAY OF FICTION and 7362! With Pat O’Neill in Person! The Philosophical Research Society is proud to welcome a Los Angeles avant-garde legend, renowned for his surrealist collages of the California landscape – experimental film pioneer and artist Pat O’Neill! Pat will join us, in person, for a screening of two works which span his brilliant career: the haunting and mesmerizing feature THE DECAY OF FICTION (2002) and the jaw-dropping psychedelic short 7362 (1967). Very rarely screened, THE DECAY OF FICTION is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece, exploring the haunted history of the now long-gone Los Angeles landmark The Ambassador Hotel. Filmed shortly before the iconic building’s demolition, O’Neill’s camera wanders its dilapidated halls while echoes of its past are played out by ghostly actors, stitching fragments of both everyday mundanity and lurid storylines while capturing the bizarre history of intrigue housed within The Ambassador’s walls. This very special evening will kick off with O’Neill’s explosively kaleidoscopic cinematic eye-trip that is 7362. Featuring sound design by Joseph Byrd of legendary avant-garde psych pop band The United States of America, the pioneering 7362 is carved into the Mt. Rushmore of psychedelic, experimental films. Don’t miss this incredible evening. Get your tickets now at prs.org/events Trailer by @stonefolk @philipmartingallery
