I grew up on a small Caribbean island, much like Bermuda - with a rich Black history, and the stories that come with it: plight, perseverance, revolution, and pride in where we come from.

Carnival was always around me, but I never ‘played mas,’ - see, my daddy was in a pastoral role at our church, so it was a hard ‘no’. My cousins begged for me to come, every year, and my dad’s answer never changed. The couple times I did attend, I’d watch from the sidelines but never in the mix: the dancing that saw bodies pressed against each other, sweaty, intimate but hardly sexualised, the colour, the feathers, the beads, the waistlines, everyone becoming someone they don’t get to be the rest of the year, and nobody, -like nobody - caring. Imagine I could be on the other side of the yellow rope, dancing behind a truck blaring the island’s favourite artists. Just imagine.

When I moved away from the Caribbean, I stopped going to Carnival altogether, and I filed the whole thing in the “I know about this, no need to experience it further, too old now anyway” folder. So when @bermuda invited me to host @windcollective, I came thinking I already knew this culture. What could be novel?

In comes ‘J’ouvert’. The dark before dawn, before the pretty costumes, when you cover yourself in paint and the whole day begins. My ancestors made these dances out of freedom, out of the morning they woke up no longer owned. And when I finally put on that costume, when I considered the story and lived it, I might met the version of myself that has been locked away, dismissed, grown out of. Who I once was, even if only by proximity, but realise I still am. I understood why my cousins annoyed my dad to let them take me, why people dance like they’re in love with life, why it’s still beautiful to celebrate from the sidelines. The colour. The joy. Pure and contagious. You move with it. Waist whining, heart full, ready for di road.

I can’t wait to share more about this trip, and “that time in Bermuda.”
