Septober Energy × Balaclava Books: Friendship Next of Kin

Septober Energy expands its zine project in collaboration with @balaclava_books , deepening our shared commitment to independent publishing and cross-disciplinary exchange. This edition will be available at our pop-up hosted at The Commons Muizenberg, an enclave for arts, conversation and community by the sea.

@balaclava_books (est. 2025) is an independent bookshop founded and curated by partners in crime Duduetsang Lamola and Dylan Brooks. Offering a collection of secondhand books, printed matter and other objects for sale at reasonable prices, Balaclava Books sources material for curious readers of all ages, cultivating a space for learning and free thought. Their partnership with The Commons Muizenberg grounds the shop in a space where ideas circulate freely and where readers, artists and thinkers converge.

In the spirit of Friendship Next of Kin, this collaboration extends outward. Independent artists, publishers and distributors @badac1d , @strange_fruitza and @blackpraxes will have some or their works on site with digital prints, posters, zines, t-shirts, stickers and newsletters. This is not just a point of sale but a cross-pollination of practices, a meeting of multiple languages, multiple hands, multiple futures.

Limited prints and one off misprint available from @strange_fruitza

Thank you for pushing local art and offering a home for outsider artists. Truly appreciate what you are doing for us on with your own time.

I make art because I want to but it really helps to have the support. That being said go buy a print or some of the Strange Fruit merch to support real living humans.

Here's a bit of my process. Drawing, photography, collage, mess, chaos, nature. A bit of everything. This is part of a test for a collaboration I'm doing with a band. I'd love to do more visuals for musicians. Support living artists over artificial intelligence.

Had the pleasure of adding to Leigh's gallery amongst some other friends. So happy to have finally get to do this @maisonmargiela inspired flower mask bust.

Leigh and I spent some time at the Winston Pub talking about masks, fashion and the really cool page @fashion_for_bank_robbers after watching bands.

So happy to commemorate both of our growth with this art.

Thank you Leigh
Xx

What do you see? Trillions of dots, countless hours.

Revisiting old pieces has been a challenge, but the reward is worth it. I'm fascinated by how new textures and details create an intricate piece that's engaging from both near and far. I often get lost in sections, finding new shapes.

Prints of this piece will soon be available through @strange_fruitza, so feel free to follow them.

As I've been tattooing more, I'm working to balance personal and commercial art. I'm excited to showcase my work more consistently.

Trillions of dots, countless hours.

Pareidolia is the human evolutionary trait of seeing faces in things. It starts with eyes because where there are eyes there are usually teeth. Very sharp teeth.

Most common example is the face they found on Mars. Depending on your angle and the shadows it can be quite convincing but from another angle it's nothing.

The same can be said about reality. There's three sides to the truth: your story, my story and what really happened. We construct our basis of reality through memory, both shared and individual, so maybe it's a little more malleable than we think.
