We don’t post much about System Activate, preferring it to exist as a mystery ritual. But I just pulled this photo out of a stack of papers and it felt like a tarot card more than just a memory. Final preparations are underway. See you on Friday.

This week we want to highlight all of the musical talent performing at our fundraiser for the Leach Botanical Garden, and today we’ll highlight the duo Foote / Dickow.

Brian Foote and Paul Dickow are fellow musicians and friends that go back decades. In the early 2000s they countered Portland’s identity as an indie rock city with the left field electronic group Nudge. They developed this further with their solo projects Leech and Strategy, as well as managing a slew of notable record labels (Community Library, Peak Oil, FO, False Aralia.) Taking this wealth of knowledge and history together, their new project Foote / Dickow features them at the apex of their talents.

This project has never performed live before, and will build upon the sound they made with their debut LP High Cube on @geographicnorth !

Tickets are SOLD OUT, see you there🌲🔊

Record of the Week—>Foote/Dickow “High Cube” (Geographic North)
Those who know already know that ‘High Cube’ is very much our shit. For those who need their memories jogged, Foote is a co-founder of Peak Oil and Dickow is the relentlessly productive Peak Oil recording artist Strategy. Both have released albums on Kranky and were part of the underrated IDM/post-rock project Nudge. As such, their music applies an avant-rock-into-ambient attitude to deconstructed bass music. This stylistic lineage might be at the very heart of Peak Oil’s mission to keep that shit next level. It should be noted, however, that ‘High Cube’ is on Geographic North, rather than Peak Oil. Both artistes have recorded for this label before, with Foote’s self-titled Smoke Point album having notable similarities to ‘High Cube’. If titles like ‘High Cube’ and ‘Smoke Point’ are leading you to assume we’re into some deeply weeded business, you wouldn’t be entirely wrong, dude. But there’s clear-headed intelligence to the Foote/Dickow duo that lifts ‘High Cube’ above any stoner fug. Its dubby beats and jazzy synths are as utopian as they are blunted. But this is no tritely escapist utopianism. It’s more like a kind of cyberpunk lounge music. In his early short story ‘Burning Chrome’, William Gibson stated that “the street finds its own uses for things”. In this context, ‘High Cube’ sounds like a sophisticated riposte to the black-pilled sloptimism of our digital fundamentalist age. Rather than anything from Gibson’s gritty Sprawl, this music feels like it would be at home among the fully automated communist hedonism of Ian M. Banks’s Culture novels. Perhaps this is the true value of electronic music in our troubled times – suggesting that a better tech-enabled future is possible. And doing so by showing rather than telling. The fact that the music itself stays deeply, straightforwardly pleasurable is a vital part of the demonstration. So, yeah, this kind of bass-heavy, atmospheric post-club music is very much our shit. But beyond its simple pleasures, we believe there’s something of real value lurking in the music. ‘High Cube’ is
