🚲 A safer Boston is a more connected Boston!

This morning, I joined Carmen Blyden from Bikes Not Bombs, and members from Mattapan Food and Fitness, LivableStreets Alliance, Boston Cyclist Union and other incredible advocates to ride the brand-new Cummings Highway path and its newly protected bike lane.

These projects are about more than pavement and paint. They’re about creating safer streets, connecting our neighborhoods, and making sure people have real options to get around, whether they’re biking, walking, taking the bus, or driving.

Multimodal transportation means building a Boston that works for everyone. I’m proud to stand alongside the organizations and residents pushing us toward a safer, healthier, and more accessible city.

Last night, I joined Boston Transportation Department’s Parking Enforcement Division for a ride-along on Blue Hill Ave to experience our streets from their perspective.

I wanted to see firsthand the traffic patterns, parking violations, double parking, and the challenges our parking enforcement officers encounter every day.

What I saw reinforced something many residents have told me, continued enforcement is necessary.

We saw vehicles blocking bus stops, double and even triple parking, and cars stopping in ways that made it harder for everyone else to safely navigate the street.

What stood out to me was that many times, it wasn’t because there was nowhere to park. We would drive a few cars down the street and find an open parking space.

When we choose to park illegally, especially when a legal space is available, we make our streets more difficult for everyone.

I also witnessed parking enforcement officers being verbally harassed simply for doing their jobs. Their work is often thankless, but they are out there every day helping keep our streets functional, accessible, and safer for everyone.

I’m grateful I had the opportunity to see this work firsthand and better understand what many residents have been telling me.

Thank you to the parking enforcement division for their work and allowing me to tag along.
