We had a bunch of people over for Thanksgiving, and one conversation struck me as interesting.

“So you’ve stopped the burpees, eh?”

Not a jab or a jest. A genuine question.

I haven’t been posting much lately. Real life, three boys, a business (@shapeofpaint ), and all the other things that demand attention.

Nonetheless, four sessions a week. Twenty minutes each. Navy SEALs and six-count military burpees.

If a tree falls in the forest and nobody hears it, does it make a sound?

Apparently, we’ve reached a point where the same question applies to personal discipline.

I’ve become increasingly fascinated by the confusion between visibility and reality. The curated existence and the unfiltered business of actually living.

Growing up, I was bullied by a cohort of gym enthusiasts. Most are now fat dads. Life has a peculiar sense of humour. (@strongdad.project Matt can help.)

I’ve also been vegetarian most of my life, though I’ll occasionally eat meat. Recently, someone remarked, “Oh, look at Mr. Veggie,” when I commented that a steak looked delicious.

Apparently, people maintain little dossiers on one another. Habits, opinions, perceived contradictions, all carefully filed away until an opportunity presents itself to announce they’ve caught you.

Congratulations, I suppose.

The performance of discipline has become nearly as marketable as discipline itself. Document the workout. Photograph the meal. Announce the achievement. Collect the applause.

Meanwhile, the body remains entirely indifferent to the audience.

Eighty minutes a week. That’s the investment. A body I’ve come to appreciate more than ever is the return.

Small, repetitive actions compound whether anyone notices or not.

To those wondering whether I’ve kept up, I have.

To those who weren’t curious, consider yourselves spared.
