Inspired by the life and work of Prof. Stuart Hall, addressing questions of race and inequality in culture and society.

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

This year’s national theme for Black History Month is all about the importance of community.

What better way to celebrate our Black communities in Hackney than by putting together a list of books for all ages – including seminal texts, librarians’ favourites, books about (and by) activists who shaped the intellectual landscape, and books by authors whom we’re proud to call our friends?

Author of numerous groundbreaking books, Kehinde Andrews is the first Black Studies professor in the UK. In Back to Black he traces back the history of Black radicalism, the people and the movements, and reflects on what it might mean today.

This picture book is pure joy! Hackney Libraries’ friends Dean Atta and Alea Marley take us on a journey with little Ari, who, through a handful of confetti, discovers the magic and power of celebrating our communities in this luminous, unapologetically positive tale.

Bryan, Dadzie and Scafe rewrite the collective history of Black women in Britain and their relationship with the British state, setting the record straight on their systemic exclusion, agency and resilience in this landmark text from 1985.

The first Black woman publisher in the UK, Busby dedicated her life to culture, politics and literature by championing others’ stories. In Part of the Story we shift the focus to her own writing as she walks us through the places, people and experiences that informed her as an intellectual and an activist.

This classic YA anthology collected by George the Poet features lots of incredible authors to build a bridge from past to future, reflecting on the diaspora and shedding light on Black British history through the medium of poetry. It will inspire readers of all ages.

A fundamental read for anyone interested in understanding contemporary culture in relation to ethnicity and nationality. This groundbreaking book is a deep dive on Black Transatlantic identity and its role in the formation of modernism in art, music and literature.

An exploration of British identity seen through the stories of generations of immigrants who left their homelands to build a new life. It collects stories that reflect on the sense of belonging and the emotion

AGMP Concerts presents NU CIVILISATION ORCHESTRA: THE STUART HALL PROJECT at Union Chapel, London on Monday 9th November 2026.

Tickets available now at: agmp.co.uk

Celebrating 100 years since the birth of jazz legend Miles Davis, Tomorrow’s Warriors presents a remarkable evening bringing together live music, film and cultural history.

Led by Peter Edwards, a five-piece Nu Civilisation Orchestra Ensemble, featuring acclaimed trumpeter Mark Kavuma, will perform the music of Miles Davis live alongside a screening of John Akomfrah’s celebrated documentary The Stuart Hall Project.

Released in 2013, the film explores the life and ideas of Stuart Hall, the pioneering cultural theorist and one of the most influential voices in British Cultural Studies. Through archive footage and Hall’s own reflections, it examines identity, race, belonging and the changing cultural landscape of Britain.

The music of Miles Davis provides a powerful soundtrack to Hall’s story, reflecting the changing times and ideas that shaped his life.

Performed live by the Nu Civilisation Orchestra Ensemble, the music becomes an integral part of the film, creating a unique dialogue between jazz, cinema and cultural history.

How does the far right build power, and how can young people organise against it?

The British Jamaican activist and thinker Stuart Hall explored how moments of crisis are often used to build support for right-wing ideas. Writing about the rise of Thatcherism and the National Front in 1979, he argued: “The ‘swing to the Right’ is not a reflection of the crisis: it is itself a response to the crisis.” For Hall, fascism emerges through the coming together of different political and social forces.

Using Hall’s ideas, this workshop will explore the rise of the far right in Britain today. We’ll look at how fear and racism are used to divide people, the role played by institutions like the state, the police and the media in mainstreaming these ideas, and the tactics used by far-right groups. Together, we’ll consider how young people can recognise, challenge and organise against these forces.

The session will combine discussion, accessible reading and writing with practical, interactive activities.

This session is brought to you by the forces of TAA and @stuarthallfoundation. Name a more iconic duo???
