POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

On April 11 we welcomed two new artists to Malt AIR: Paula Niño and Sidra Khawaja.

Already they have experienced Easter festivities at Maltfabrikken, a workshop at Dansk Talentakademi, and visits to Huset for Kunst og Design, Sound Art Lab, and Det Jyske Kunstakademi.

About the artists:

Originally from Bogotá, Paula has lived in Munich for the past eight years. In that time her work has become increasingly autobiographical, as she explores the structural and emotional complications of migration and identity, as well as the sense of belonging, through installations, text, video and painting.
@pacakid

Sidra often engages with the geopolitics of the Kashmir region where she is from-embroiled in a violent conflict between India & Pakistan. With a background in design, she uses traditional craft, sculpture, sound, light, video and textile to explore histories of migration, protest, water politics, and issues surrounding representation. Recently Sidra has been working with food to reflect on personal histories, identities, culture and archives.

Sidra Khawaja
Sidra is an interdisciplinary creative practitioner, researcher and educator. She did her Bachelors in Visual Communication and Design from the NCA in 2015 and a Master of Design in Designed Objects (MDDO) from The Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) in 2021. Her practice lies at the intersection of design, craft, anthropology and cultural exploration. Her narratives bridge socio-political and cultural contexts through interactive public experiences using objects, installations, and archives. Her work critically delves into material culture, sparking dialogues on decolonization, identity, representation, ecofeminism and climate change.
Teaching design since 2016 she is currently a visiting faculty at the BNU, Lahore. Sidra’s work has been exhibited at international museums and galleries. It was selected for the Emerging Designer Showcase at Wanted Design, NY Design Week 2021 and was also shortlisted for Global Design Graduate Show 2021 in collaboration with GUCCI. She was the recipient of New Artist Society Merit scholarship at SAIC and is currently at an Artist Residency programs at Delfina Foundation, London. Sidra will also proceed to Denmark for MALT AiR in 2025.

Sidra co-founded Kashmir Creatives Collective - a platform focusing on humanizing Kashmir through critical engagement and creative projects, which also serves as an artistic and cultural repository for leading Kashmiri creatives & emerging voices. She set up a digital research archive – Karigar Gallery, as part of her teaching practice, fostering the preservation of indigenous craft and design. She investigates the Kashmiri cultural identity and its enduring influence on indigenous populations & diaspora by critically examining tangible & intangible heritage through visual-material culture. Sidra aims for a deeper understanding of craft and culinary practices within the conflict zone, its geopolitics, resistance, displacement & ecological exploitation. She hopes to create meaningful public experiences that represent suppressed narratives and histories of Kashmir. #kashmir #kashmirshawl #mapshawl #lahorebiennalefoundation #tomorrowisntpromised #11templeroad

Bagh-e Hind is a multisensory exhibition conceptualised around the olfactory landscape of Mughal South Asia (S.A). Launched in 2021 as a digital exhibition, it's a collaboration between art critic & perfumer Bharti Lalwani (Pune) and historian & literary scholar Nicolas Roth (USA). Nicolas, a specialist in Mughal-era horticultural writings, made selections of five paintings depicting 17 & 18 century garden scenes that Bharti translated into elements of synesthesia – fragrance, edible perfume™, tea & incense, among others.
The exhibition takes viewers into historic gardens of abundance & beauty by reuniting sensual, botanical, musical & intellectual culture of the time that enriches the experience of South Asian art & art history, like never before. Garden paintings which, while in the public domain as part of digitised collections of institutions outside S.A., are rarely displayed and have not been shown together, much less contextualised with scent, botany, literature, flavour and sound, all at once. They highlight how artists depicted flowers based on garden traditions, beliefs, seasons, scent & colour, in order to stage a scene.
At Tomorrow Isn’t Promised for LBF (03) 2024 the chapter on Smoke, as painted in the standard Shab-i Barat or Diwali scenes, will be shown. Much like for Diwali, lighting oil lamps, sparklers & fireworks are central to the way Shab-i Barat was celebrated, so the conventions associated with the representation of the two festivals in 17th &18th-century paintings can be interchangeable. As Nic explains, “Iranian traditions associated with Shab-i Barat - which may have still been followed by immigrants & Persianized elites in S.A. in the 18th century, especially in places like Avadh and Hyderabad - also involve burning of isfand or wild rue (Peganum harmala). ⏰ Conversation : 5.00 PM
Duration: 30 minutes +Q&A
🏡 Venue: Main Courtyard, 11 Temple Road, Mozang, Lahore

I spent the morning at 11 Temple Road’s ‘Tomorrow isn’t Promised’. The show includes a section drawing from the smoke chapter of the Bagh-e-Hind project by Bharti Lalwani and Nicolas Roth. This old family home containing many stories of cross migrations at partition is a fabulous space for displaying contemporary art. The show includes works by Saba Qizilbash, Affan Baghpati, Marjan and Maryam Baniasadi, Sidra Khawaja and others.
