BOULEVARD HOUSE | Early morning bike ride, then home to the ensuite to shower and get ready for the day.

Our client rises early, so we designed this space around that ritual, with a deep blue palette, plenty of natural light and a few moments of softness.

Just one chapter of Boulevard House, where we reworked a Federation home around the way this family lives now.

BOULEVARD HOUSE | How do you make a Federation house work for a family of six without losing what made it special in the first place?

We started with how our client actually lives. Four growing kids meant the house had to do a lot more: room for everyone to gather, and room for everyone to have their own space.

Together with Peter Barton Architects, we opened up the rear of the house and rethought the position of the kitchen, living and dining from the ground up, so all three now connect directly to the garden.

Soft turquoise, aquamarine and blush are layered throughout, drawing inspiration from the original leadlight and fireplace tiles, with curved joinery and flashes of red adding a little playfulness.

A lot has changed, but the original character of the house remains, with a layout that better suits family life today.

A big thank you to the talented collaborators who worked on this project, and to our wonderful clients.

See more of the project in the latest issue of @est_living (link in our bio), and congratulations to Karen McCartney on her first issue as Editor.

A significant moment for Australian Interior Design.

Last week Mardi became one of the first Interior Designers in Australia to be given DIA Accreditation, alongside Mim Fanning from @mimdesignstudio , Sarah-Jane Pyke from @arentpykestudio and Mel Mackenzie from @tkdarchitects

For an industry that has historically lacked recognition and regulation, it feels like such a milestone.

It’s about recognising the education, experience and professional standards behind what we do, and creating a stronger, more recognised profession for the designers coming after us.

A small group at the beginning of what we know will become a very big movement for our industry.

The biggest thank you to the @design_institute_au and all those involved who have worked so hard for this.

MIRROR, MIRROR | The beauty of a space often lies in the dialogue between its pieces. At South Yarra House, sculptural forms, reflective surfaces and bold colour create moments of warmth, character and delight throughout the home.

VRG GRL BONDI

Designed in response to the client’s vision for a space that felt immersive, elevated and effortless, we drew on the softness and contrast of the Bondi landscape, layering warm textures, reflective finishes and sculptural forms to shape a considered retail experience.

Translucent materials, curved elements and moments of intimacy create a space designed for discovery, connection and ease.

The project translates the evolving @vrg.grl identity into physical form - confident, tactile, energetic and quietly refined.

A special thank you to @yellowtrace for featuring the project. Head to the link in our bio to explore more.

SOUTH YARRA | The main bedroom at our South Yarra project was designed as a true exhale at the end of the day.

Wrapped in milky polished plaster walls, custom carpet underfoot and a generous leather bedhead stretching wall-to-wall, the space leans into warmth, softness and comfort without feeling overly precious. We wanted it to feel cocooning and calm - somewhere to retreat from busy work lives and switch off completely.

ALL IN THE DETAILS - The living room at Grid House is anchored by stone, timber battens and steel detailing; layering warmth, texture and a subtle grid-like rhythm that nods to the home’s weatherboard DNA. A raised ceiling and expansive glazing amplify natural light and create a sense of openness throughout the space.

SHORTLISTED | Our South Yarra clients - art lovers, avid readers, generous hosts - had a few non-negotiables: a home for their beloved piano, a place to read and share books, and a room that felt like a cocoon, set apart from the rhythm of the rest of the house. Very early on, the idea of a “salon” took hold; a moody, warm space that encouraged gathering, music, conversation and quiet ritual. From there, the design for the rest of the home fell naturally into place.

Every project for us is a journey shaped by the personalities of our clients, their passions, habits and histories become the framework for the design. That’s what keeps each home distinct and deeply personal. We don’t design for awards, but when the process and relationships come together in this way, it’s a privilege to see the work recognised.

We’re delighted that South Yarra House has been shortlisted in the 2025 IDEA Awards in the Residential Single category, alongside Gable House for Residential Single and Colour. A lovely by-product of the hard work, trust and enduring collaborations that make projects like this possible.
