Another material investigation for VIVID design exhibition, this time teaming up with @morgandotydesign. We explored her recycled paper process and found ways to optimize the process for larger scale production and customization.

Paper Thin is an interior wall covering system. Porous natural fibres gained from revitalising waste paper are pressed into sheets and CNC milled into wall tiles to aid in acoustic absorption. Formally adaptive, colour adjustable and conservative in its production; Paper Thin serves as a biodegradable alternative to interior wall finishes

FINALIST LIGHTING DESIGN: Morgan Doty & Ash Allen
Inspired by sand dunes of the Simpson desert; Crest is a pendant light made of paper pulp, re-purposing discarded magazines by vacuum forming over reusable moulds. Two thin domes unite to provide strength, while the split celebrates the peak and how light interacts with a desert landscape at sundown.

Two years ago I went on road trip through the Simpson Desert. The colour and texture of the orange sand dunes were inspirational. In collaboration with the amazing @morgandotydesign for NGV’s #melbournedesignweek and in particular for @friends.associates ‘Life&Death’ show, we designed and made, from recycled paper pulp, the “Crest” pendant light. In the Simpson Desert, the dunes’ crests run approximately north to south due to the prevailing winds. The western “stoss” side of the dunes has a lower gradient and a ripply texture from the wind lifting and moving the sand particles in a parabolic arc. The steeper “lee” side is smoother. We tried to capture these natural elements (colour, texture and form) in this pendant light, whilst highlighting the sharp crest with an opening - a clear division between light and dark. In addition to being displayed as part of the Melbourne Movement stand, our groups work was part of the Salone Satalite competition area. Such a highlight when one of our Melb Movementiers @kristen._wang took out the major prize (Best piece on Food as a Design Object) for her piece Re.Bean Coffee Stool (made from recycled coffee grounds & bean bag) 👏👏👏
