WOMEN IN FOOD: A Collective Learning A little round-up of some of the amazing women have been working with / some interviewed recently for @theethnicfoodshop project (& @routesandfroots). More coming! Learning is collective. Everyday I’m inspired by people like Mana, Rahel, Rosh, Numra, Tin Tin, Rebecca, Shanice and Mimi & Lulu - using food as a vehicle to build upon their ancestral stories - from Korea to Iran to Indonesia to Jamaica to Pakistan to China to the Philippines and Sweden, and enrich communities in this city. They remind me of what true success is - a passion project that's really for the wellbeing of the collective. Using your place in the world - the links, the roots, the experiences you have, and  - your feminine instinct - to bring cultural wisdom into the world in a way that is unique and beautiful to you. How they stay true to their voices, the linkings of generations - assimilating memories from their mothers and grandmothers working across generations to create meaning in a fast-paced profit-driven world that doesn't allow us enough time for the story.  "Food tells stories," says Mana - and stories are a node for survival, so let's start making time.  Swipe for some quotes from these women. 'A Return to the Welcome Table', 2021 at @home_by_ronanmckenzie. – In 2021, @ronanksm invited me to create a food offering for a roundtable conversation, with a nod to James Baldwin's 'Welcome Table' as reference. Set against the backdrop of 'The Self Portrait' exhibition and hosted by @lisaandersonaa, it was beautiful to see the possibilities for an inclusive space for dialogue. Recently exacerbated by Covid-19, Brexit and the “Cost of Living Crisis”, few statistics better exemplify the UK’s inequality than those detailing food insecurity – the inability to afford or access fresh, nutritious food. Food security is dependent on a predictable climate and healthy ecosystems - without urgent and immediate action, climate change will further disrupt food availability, reduce access to food, and affect food quality.
