POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

@alan_latter_art has an all-consuming passion for paint. A trail of drips leads up the wooden stairs to his Suffolk attic, which is part studio, part “museum”. Daubed palettes sit on display; finished canvases crowd the walls. But more unexpectedly, hundreds of vintage tubes of paint collected from around the world are exquisitely arrayed on tables like works of art in themselves. Some tubes have dried out and are unusable, while others burst with rich pigments unobtainable today - perfect for his many nostalgic works inspired by photographs from the 1950s and 60s. Family scenes and still lifes are among Latter’s favourite subjects, especially those that conjure up holidays in his beloved France. He’s also a keen portraitist who aims to “place the right face in the right setting”.

Given his love of paint itself, it’s no surprise that he revels in its texture and applies it with relish. He has recently begun adding acrylics to his regular oils, enabling him to bring precision and different tones to his work. Last summer Latter was intrigued to spot some 1960s tubes of paint on eBay from a Ukrainian seller. “I took a chance and bought them: to my amazement they arrived in just two weeks!” He turned his purchase into artworks which he sold to fund food supplies for people trapped in their homes in Kyiv. He then depicted the squeezed tubes themselves, adding the Russian word “Peace” on the labels..

We featured Alan as our Artist of the Month for January 2023
Thank you Alan for sharing your time & art with us! ❤️ 🎨 ❤️

@alan_latter_art • Ukranian Artist's Oil 'Carmine Red' #2 - acrylic on canvas 16" x 10". Sold and 100% donated to @ivansubbotin1983 and his team in Kyiv that provide desperately needed food and blankets to old folk In and around the city. This is my second painting of the vintage 1970s tube of Carmine Red that I bought recently from @tuk.ua who lives in Kyiv. The tube is from a collection of art materials used by a Ukranian Artist working in the 1960s and 1970s. #supportukraine @braveukraine24 #calatter #tube_art👨‍🎨
