60 years ago, Black artists, writers, poets, performers, and philosophers came together to forge a vision of what Black life could become. Collectively, they breathed life into their vision, creating art movements and building institutions.
What does Black Power mean in a time of dwindling access and rising racism? We are seeking works that respond to the legacy of the Black Arts Movement, works that breathe life into a new vision for Black America while speaking our self-evident truths to power. Gallery of Zhou b art center -1029 W 35th Chicago IL 60609, 3/20/2026 between 7-10PM They called it decorative. They called it useful. They called it women’s work. Cutting. Mending. Layering. Repeating what needed to be done. Making beauty where none was expected. When women appeared in history, it was rarely as artists— more often as hands. When women appeared in Hunter’s life, they were the marvelous mothers who she encountered. This show honors these mothers and daughters – some seen as artists, some seeing motherhood as their art. Women were never absent. The work was always here. It always was. About Candace Hunter @chleeart Candace Hunter (chlee), is a Chicago based artist and curator who tells stories of a mighty race – often through the eyes of little girls. Using appropriated materials from magazines, maps, cloth and various reused materials, she offers new landscapes back to the viewer with a glimpse of history and admiration of the beautiful. A highly respected artist in the Midwest, chlee’s most recent honors include the Elevate Climate Changemakers Award (2022), 3Arts Next Level Award (2021) and the Tim and Helen Meier Foundation Award (2020). 💃🏽🪘🎨 Last week, the Chicago Park District hosted the inaugural Culture, Arts & Nature Conference! This professional development convening gave Park staff the chance to build skills, explore resources, and strengthen their roles as creative advocates and instructors in their parks. Throughout the day, participants engaged in keynotes, workshops, and sessions focused on art, cultural event production, and environmental justice. Attendees connected with colleagues and discovered new ways to bring creativity and culture into the parks. The day concluded with curator-led tours of the Young Cultural Stewards, Retrospective Exhibition.  Park Staff were: - Empowered by Keynote Janell Nelson @jnj_creative_, Superintendent Carlos Ramirez-Rosa @chicagoparksceo, and Commissioner Coya Paz Brownrigg @coyapazpublic, who honored and reminded us of the power, purpose, and joy cultivated by staff and artists in parks.  - Explored restorative workshops, presentations and resource tables from park colleagues and partners. - Live Screen Printing with William Estrada @werdmvmnt and the Mobile Street Art Cart Project with limited edition printed park swag. Connected with colleagues to share resources with fellow instructors from across the Park District. ✨🦋Last Saturday we celebrated the opening of our Young Cultural Stewards Retrospective Exhibition at the South Shore Cultural Center Gallery! ✨ The afternoon was filled with creativity and connection — from butterfly-making led by Climate Justice & Arts teaching artist Bee Rodriguez, to an ecological sound walk guided by Inferno program steward Khalyle Hagood, and an uplifting set by DJ Love Marie @i.am.lovemarie. Guests enjoyed games, meaningful conversations, film screenings, and heartfelt letter writing to our favorite educators and land stewrads. 💌 The exhibition will run for two more weeks; with a closing reception on Saturday, November 8th from 10:00-2:00pm at the same location.
