Sixty makers, one brief, and as many readings of what a collar could be. They hung at the height they’d be worn, turning on twine. @lelajacobs has been preoccupied with the collar in her own practice for years, and when she put the question out, the answers came back pinned, tucked, beaded, threaded, cut, embroidered, woven, and commerce nowhere in it.

She curated the show with the collective at @thekeep__, and I left wanting to know more, so caught up with Lela for an interview in the new issue of @homestylemag.

Collar comes to Ōtautahi this month as part of the @nzfashionwk Spring Fashion Festival. Can highly recommend nabbing a ticket… It’s even better in person.

Last night, we celebrated the opening of ᴘᴜʙʟɪᴄ ʀᴇᴄᴏʀᴅ’s new gallery space on Great North Road in Tāmaki Makaurau. The inaugural exhibition included a room of certamics by Ōtautahi-based artist Carmel Pollock, as well as new work by Kara Burrowes and Peter Derksen.

Our beautiful COLLAR collaboration sold out during @nzfashionwk in Auckland.

We are delighted to share this celebration of making, materiality, and craftsmanship with Ōtautahi.

For one afternoon only, 60 makers from across Aotearoa come together in a collective exhibition responding to the collar as both object and adornment.

Suspended as a single installation, the collars become a portrait of contemporary making — revealing the richness of material exploration, technical skill, and creative expression across disciplines.

Presented during Ōtautahi’s Spring Fashion Festival.

𝙊𝙗𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙨 𝙗𝙮 𝙒𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣, presented by Yu Mei in collaboration with Gow Langsford and Range Rover, brings together works by 12 artists and explores the many ways objects can hold ideas, histories, stories and meaning.

Featuring Augustina Binyamin, Katherine Rutecki, Kathryn Tsui, Catherine Griffiths, Marta Buda, Jaime Jenkins, Shannen Young, Binh Minh Ha, Josephine Jelicich, Jenny Takahashi Palmer, Georgia Tikaputini Douglas Hood and Turumeke Harrington.

As part of New Zealand Fashion Week, Yu Mei presented ‘Objects by Women’ in partnership with Range Rover and Gow Langsford, bringing together 10 women designers and artists across weaving, ceramics, woodwork, carving and ceramics; with utility, craft and material experimentation as the common thread.

The exhibition marked the debut of Yu Mei’s Pania bag. Developed over more than three years of testing and iteration.

Building on the creative energy of the inaugural Wellington design biennial, Common Material, the exhibition celebrates the ongoing contribution of women to design in Aotearoa.

.. outside {Suite} gallery last evening, after the final set sail of ‘folded eggs’ with bighearted and caring words from the incomparable Luit Bieringa, thank you, thank you. And thank you to those who were there, nifty to be back in Wellington amongst good friends.

Dean Tiemi Te Au, of ‘Muttonbirds—part of a story’ (2002-2003), with Catherine and me. Dean ambled into the gallery at the pinpoint moment Luit invoked his ghost, faultless timing.
.
The artist book of that series sold out long ago, did its job, yet, despite Dean’s clear whakapapa, and perhaps because of the Māori Land Court and the Department of Conservation and others, his long struggle goes on and on and on. Soon off to the High Court for the next skirmish. Kia kaha.

COLLAR. As part of @nzfashionwk. Masterminded by @lelajacobs @thekeep__ . Here especially to marvel at @studiocatherine’s exquisite piece, delicate in tin foil. Spied the brilliant @matt.hurley at work. @lelajacobs extra pair of hands. Marvelling at moving light with @bruceconnew. Bumping into familiar faces, old and new. A long lost feeling to be out, without a camera but seeing photos anyway. Gorgeous light, creativity, community. Cant wait to see the book so can spend more time with the thoughtful, awe inspiring pieces.
