I had the pleasure of joining @trio.ondata for a performance of the stunning Saans by @reenaesmail. This music has completely captivated me—I can't stop thinking about it. I just want to live in the sound world Reena created.

“THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION THAT WINGS ASK” by the incredible Ted Hearne, with text by Anne Leilehua Lanzilotti.

A snippet from our performance at the @bangonacan Music Festival at MASS MoCA, @massmoca and the amazing @hedtearne speaking the text.

The piece is scored for string quartet and speaking voice.

It was an incredible experience performing alongside our Bang on a Can mentor, @celloarlen , on cello, and fellow musicians @studioferri on violin and @ethsu_ on viola.

More about the piece:

Ted wrote this setting with Saul’s voice in mind, supporting it with a variety of musical framings. At times, the quartet reflects the iterative nature of the text. At others, a single player supports Saul’s voice by mimicking its speech rhythms. Then, all at once, the floor drops away, and the quartet hovers in a fragile sustained chord with light bow pressure, as though doubting its own sound.

As Saul writes:

“At the end of the day, it has to do with our ability to dance through things. This is life, and life is a dance. And it’s a dance through all these wonderful and not so wonderful realities. And I have some questions.”

This past summer I was incredibly lucky to work with a group of not only phenomenal musicians, but people who truly felt like family at @bangonacan

I often speak about my work satirically - the only way I can navigate the friction between daily joy and a loss of faith in tomorrow. Like many of us, I feel happy, hysterical, devastated, confused… and deeply privileged to be here making art. My music reflects that: constant shifts, glimpses into disparate worlds, deranged joy.

Churn is the first piece I’ve written in years where I allowed myself to stay still - to resist my impulse to uplift (or impose a kind of neurotic joy) out of a sense of obligation not to give in to despair.

I’m endlessly grateful to @donnachadennehy for his support and mentorship writing this piece.

Churn explores natural disrupted cycles through irregular loops, a process I first explored with my dear friend and collaborator @kai.lab_

Full piece on SoundCloud linked in my bio.
