Reposted from @columbiaclimate

We are very pleased to welcome our inaugural Climate, Earth and Society Distinguished Fellows, five exceptional leaders who will enrich our teaching, research, and impact:

* Rohit “Rit” Aggarwala is a leader in urban sustainability and infrastructure who previously served as New York City’s Chief Climate Officer and Commissioner of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection.

* Justin Brice Guariglia is a visual artist whose work explores changing ecosystems and humanity’s relationship with the natural world through collaborations with scientists and other thinkers.

* Mareva Grabowski-Mitsotakis is an entrepreneur and creative leader focused on sustainable business practices, cultural heritage, and innovation in the creative economy.

* Sarah B. Kapnick is a climate scientist and Global Head of Climate Advisory at J.P. Morgan, who previously served as Chief Scientist at NOAA, where she advanced climate research and prediction.

* Miranda Massie is the founding director of the Climate Museum, where she has pioneered the use of arts, storytelling, and community engagement to build public understanding and action on climate change.

“By bringing accomplished leaders into our community, the program creates opportunities for our students, researchers, and faculty to engage with new perspectives, learn from experience, and explore how knowledge can be translated into meaningful action. I am delighted to welcome this year’s Fellows and to have them contribute to the intellectual life of the school,” says Alexis Abramson, dean of the Columbia Climate School.

It was a very special treat to welcome two remarkable geniuses to the studio on Saturday — world renowned Jazz legend @bigchiefdonaldharrison and @brownu theoretical physicist @stephonjazz ahead of their presentation and performance at the @brooklynmuseum with the amazing @jannalevin (another genius!) with support from the @simonsfoundation

This past Sunday, after 18 years, we finally got the band back together.

In January 2008, I was alongside @iceman_hof when he broke his own world record — sitting in a box of ice for 72 minutes. With us was Dr. Ken Kamler, who practices “extreme medicine”, consults for NASA and invited me along. Ken’s partner Granis, a world champion free diver and nurse, monitored Wim’s vitals during the ice bath. Ken was there to narrate and observe in case anything went sideways.

Sunday was the first time the four of us had been in the same room since. Wim is now a globally recognized icon of cold therapy and breathwork, but he’s exactly who he was in 2008 — just with better PR.

My EARTH WORKS show at the @nortonmuseumofart mapped what we’re losing — glaciers, coastlines, the living systems we’ve stopped paying attention to. Wim’s work starts somewhere more intimate: the body you’ve stopped paying attention to. Different scales, same disconnection. As a society we’ve drifted from ourselves, from our bodies, from the natural world, and Sunday felt like a reunion of people who’ve been steadily working on that same rupture from opposite ends.

If you haven’t tried a cold shower or plunge, I highly recommend it. The science behind Wim’s work is more solid than the remaining glaciers on our planet.
