Next up from Apt MN, as featured in @vogueliving: the principal bathroom. Here we continued the project’s architectural treatment of material. Expansive marble slabs cover the floor, walls and vanity, while a sculptural marble tub gives the room an almost monumental quality. Alabaster pendants softly light the vanity niche, framed in bronze. Everything from the tub to the trim was designed by us, @studiolawahl. Double helix, 2022. Darkened beech Carved from a single log which, unbeknownst to us, had a piece of hefty steel power cable hardware buried deep in its middle. Commissioned for the beautiful apartment of @nathalieschuterman by @studiolawahl Photo by @florbrant

Next up from Apt MN, as featured in @vogueliving: the kitchen. Bespoke cabinetry, bar stools and dining table in teak and bronze set the tone. For the countertops we chose a durable quartzite with exquisite veining, perfect for a client who loves to cook without worrying about stains. Inset vitrine cabinets on each side of the doorway into the sitting room give generous space for glassware. We’re thrilled that Apt MN, designed by us, @studiolawahl, and captured by @florbrant, is now featured in @vogueliving! The walk-in closet of fashion entrepreneur @nathalieschuterman was conceived as a room in its own right. Responding to our client’s wish for a generous and social space, we designed it as a private salon, dressing room and workspace rather than a purely functional wardrobe. Bespoke joinery, hand-painted @degournay panels, lighting by @apparatusstudio and custom-designed furniture give the room an identity all of its own. White ceilings, beige walls, and matching white baseboards always feel safe. But we’ve become so used to to this formula that we no longer notice its main side effect: it visually cuts our rooms into fragmented pieces. Take a look at these slides. Here, the walls, doors, ceilings, and even the radiators are drenched in the exact same deep hue. In the design world, this technique is known as Colour Drenching or Monochromatic Wrapping. Why is it so impossible to look away from these spaces, and how exactly do they trick our mind? Let’s decode this visual alchemy. • Disappearing Corners Our brain perceives room dimensions by tracking contrast lines — like where a dark wall meets a white ceiling. When every surface shares a single tone, these physical boundaries dissolve. The eye no longer stumbles over structural joints, making modest spaces feel infinitely deeper and more expansive. • The Cocooning Effect In a world overloaded with sensory noise, Cocooning turns the home into an ultimate sanctuary. Neuroscientists note that when a room envelops you in one complex, deep shade, our nervous system instantly downshifts. By eliminating high-contrast transitions, we lower the brain’s cognitive load. The mind stops scanning and surrenders to a profound sense of psychological safety. • A Quiet Rebellion This trend is a quiet manifesto against the sterile, soul-crushing minimalism of properties flipped for rent. For too long, spaces have been designed to please a hypothetical future buyer, erasing personality. Colour drenching is a conscious shift away from treating an interior as a “safe financial asset” and moving toward design as a deeply personal, sensory experience. 🔗Featured studios & designers: • Slide 2, 3: Design by @neilarchitecture / Photo by @blachford • Slide 4: Design by @nickeykehoe / Photo by @haris.kenjar • Slide 5: Design by @flackstudio_ / Photo by @smartanson • Slide 6: Design by @mkcarchitecture / Photo by @atanz • Slide 7: Design by @lauranneeliseschmitt / Photo by @matthieusalvaing • Slide 8: Design by @studiolawahl / Photo by @kristofer_johnsson #colourdrenching #monochromaticwrapping #interiorcurator #moodyinteriors #architecturaldigest
