Historic Barrio Viejo is one of a kind and located just south of Downtown Tucson 🏠🏠🏠 This neighborhood is a testament to love & perseverance of a culture that was almost demolished. Do you have any stories about Barrio Viejo? What do you love about the neighborhood? After losing ‘La Calle’ (a much larger central neighborhood between The Presidio and Barrio Viejo) to the development of the Convention Center and many still empty lots of Downtown Tucson, residents & activists succeeded in saving this vibrant neighborhood south of Cushing Street. Annie Laos spearheaded a campaign to protect El Tiradito that landed the shrine on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 thus saving the entire neighborhood. Some buildings date back to the 1860s with their own Spanish style design making Barrio Viejo extremely unique in the US and the world. In 2023, the neighborhood was designated a National Historic Landmark District, recognizing its critical role in Mexican-American heritage and desert architecture. The neighborhood is also the location of renowned architect Rick Joy’s Studio Rick Joy tucked behind timeless adobe walls and built with rammed earth. There are sidewalks, but it is not uncommon to see people walking with dogs and strollers in the middle of the street and connects into Tucson’s 100+ mile bike loop. Tucson, we are here and we can’t wait to spend these next couple of days together. We have wound our way from the Chihuahuan Desert to the Sonoran, from high desert to low, and landed at Studio light | space, surrounded by the works of Wes Mills and Mark Baseman and the warmth of Beverly Fisher. On Saturday, we’ll close out our visit with a desert happy hour in the courtyard featuring / shed margaritas, made by none other than Johnny himself, small-batch wines from Arizona’s very own Cactus Cru, two of our favorite expressions of NON and a special treat from Holy Focaccia. Toast with us: to printed matter, to wide horizons and to the big, beautiful friendships that form because of them.

At long last, we are making our way to Tucson—our dryland neighbors to the west—for a two day pop-up at Studio light | space. Visit us to browse “Desert by Design” and our tabletop altar, a collection of prints, found objects and reading material that inform our practice, on the 29th and 30th from 12 to 5pm. Tucson has long been a fixture in our travels across the southwest, and we owe much of our book to this city surrounded by saguaros. On Friday, follow us to @ursa_az for a taste of the high desert with @shed_project and then on Saturday, meet us back in Barrio Viejo to toast these arid lands that we hold so dear with a special happy hour and book signing at the gallery from 3 to close. We can’t wait to wrap the sweetest month of May with you 💛
