Join textile artist Phong Chi Lai for a workshop series exploring the creative, sustainable, and social possibilities of working with cloth.

Across four workshops participants will learn practical techniques while sharing stories, skills and ideas through making. Using reclaimed textiles and natural materials, the program celebrates the simple act of making together and the connections that emerge through cloth, creativity and community.

Finally finished the piece I started at the Slow Stitching Workshop with Phong Chi Lai. The colours of the naturally dyed wool give this abstract piece an unexpected softness. Now to decide what to do with it

Wonderful Slow Stitching workshop today at the Australian Tapestry Workshop with the amazing textile artist Phong Chi Lai using fabulous naturally dyed woollen threads and linen. Working surrounded by amazingly tapestries in progress was truly inspiring. I’ve found a new way to look at simple stitches and the effects that can be created.

WORKSHOP | Slow Stitching with Phong Chi Lai

Unwind and stitch slowly with Phong Chi Lai (Studio PCL) in this hands-on embroidery workshop. Using ATW’s botanically dyed yarns, you’ll learn decorative stitches and create your own sampler on hand-loomed linen. Experiment with colour, texture, and pattern to build a unique embroidered textile swatch.

Perfect for beginners and seasoned crafters alike, this workshop celebrates mindful making and the simple pleasure of working with your hands. All materials are included and yours to keep. You’ll take home linen, an ATW botanical thread pack, and an embroidery needle, neatly packed in a calico drawstring bag for continued stitching at home.

These are some photos I took of the pieces exhibited in the recent exhibition 藍の流れ The Flow of Indigo (2026). Curated by Celina Kanae Samarakoon @child.of.society and held at the historic Aizumicho Historical Museum @ainoyakata in Tokushima, Japan, the exhibition brought together ten artists in a shared exploration of indigo as material, memory, and a cultural bridge between Australia and Japan.

It was an honour to be included in this exhibition and to the able to display my pieces in such a beautiful and important place.
