We’ve made new work. We wanted to create small limited editions that captured what we have been exploring and talking about. We are always interest in that point where textiles and art meet. We wanted this first collection to be minimalist and bold. Link in bio for more x by @textilesxart

We’d like to express our deep sadness at the passing of artist Yayoi Kusama. Here we both are in 2025 celebrating the completion of TextilesXArt with a trip to Kyoto to see the incredible exhibition of her prints at @kyotocitykyoceramuseum . As always we were inspired and deeply moved by her work and life. We hope she finds peace now amongst the infinite stars. “Our earth is only one polka dot among a million stars in the cosmos. Polka dots are a way to infinity. When we obliterate nature and our bodies with polka dots, we become part of the unity of our environment. I become part of the eternal and we obliterate ourselves with love.” Kusama 1929-2026 xx by @textilesxart

My work featured in 𝘛𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘹 𝘈𝘳𝘵, a new Thames & Hudson publication by Ramona Barry and Beck Jobson—exploring the powerful role textiles play in shaping contemporary art.

—

Textile art has surged into the spotlight, shedding its long-standing association with domesticity and craft to take centre stage in galleries, biennales and critical discourse. Authors Ramona Barry and Beck Jobson explore this vibrant resurgence, and the way artists across the globe are embracing traditional techniques like weaving, embroidery, quilting and dyeing, while pushing them into bold new territory. Far from decorative or nostalgic, these works speak to urgent contemporary themes: identity, gender, migration and environment.

Textiles have become a site of resistance, storytelling and innovation. This global survey of forty-four artists reveals the shifting boundaries between craft and fine art, and the expressive power of cloth in the hands of today's most boundary-pushing creatives. Textile art isn't just having a moment, it's reshaping the conversation.

“...Arzabe began exclusively making woven works using his own modernist abstract paintings as source materials, a change that added a robust quality both physically and conceptually. Using an industrial fabricator to neatly slice his paintings into regular strips, he pulls one painting under tension onto a wooden stretcher frame that acts as the loom. A second painting is woven through by hand, pick after pick, one strip at a time. Integrating his own imagery as warp and weft provides aesthetic authority, while still leaving room for the process to transform the work in unpredicted ways." - From Beck Jobson’s writing in the new publication, @textilesxart

Miguel Arzabe’s solo exhibition, ‘Sin Contar Cincuenta’ is open Thurs-Sat 1-5pm until March 21. For all inquiries contact info@johanssonprojects.com

Why are so many contemporary artists turning to thread, fabric and fibre to make their most powerful work?

Textiles x Art by Ramona Barry and Beck Jobson is a global survey of forty-four artists, revealing the shifting boundaries between craft and fine art, and the expressive power of cloth in the hands of today's most boundary-pushing creatives. EMMA BUSWELL in ‘Textiles X Art’

‘Textiles X Art: How textiles are shaping contemporary art’
by Ramona Barry and Beck Jobson
Published by Thames and Hudson Australia, 2025

📍

Textile art has surged into the spotlight, shedding its long-standing association with domesticity and craft to take centre stage in galleries, biennales and critical discourse. Authors Ramona Barry and Beck Jobson explore this vibrant resurgence, and the way artists across the globe are embracing traditional techniques like weaving, embroidery, quilting and dyeing, while pushing them into bold new territory. Far from decorative or nostalgic, these works speak to urgent contemporary themes: identity, gender, migration and environment.

📍

Emma is a Walyalup (Fremantle) based artist, curator and designer fascinated with systems of government, economies and culture, particularly in relation to constructs of place, identity and community. Her current work takes its inspiration from the matrilineal hand craft and knitting techniques passed down from her grandmother and mother, as well as a contemplative investigation into the nature of kitsch, ephemera and national identities.
