📍 Day 3 — Arkaba Walk | Ikara–Flinders Ranges, South Australia

15 km | Elder Camp to Arkaba Homestead

Day 3 began with a sunrise I’ll remember for a long time. From the warmth of my swag, I watched the first golden light spill across the Elder Range, setting its rugged cliffs ablaze in deep shades of burnt orange, amber and gold. The crisp morning air, the stillness of the Outback and the sheer scale of the landscape made for one of those rare moments when you simply lie there, taking it all in, wishing time would stand still.

We set off through the cool morning air, winding through mallee and native pine forests before climbing into the Red Range. The morning was blissful, with perfect walking temperatures and the rugged beauty of the ranges all around us. By afternoon, a light shower rolled in, revealing another side of the landscape. The greens became richer, the colours more vivid, and the ancient terrain seemed to come alive in an entirely different way.

Following the trail towards Arkaba Creek, I took my time soaking up the final stretch of wilderness before making my way back to Arkaba Homestead.

As night fell, we gathered around the fire for a final evening of sharing stories, reliving the past three days on the trail and reflecting on the moments that had made this journey so special. With fine South Australian wine in hand and a delicious dinner prepared by Arkaba’s resident chefs, it was the perfect way to bring our Outback adventure to a close.

📍 Day 2 - Arkaba Walk | Ikara–Flinders Ranges, South Australia

14 km | Black Gap Bush Camp to Elder Camp

Day 2 began with a hearty breakfast at Black Gap before we set off along the iconic Heysen Trail, one of Australia’s longest walking trails. The track meandered through rolling hills and remnants of the region’s pastoral past, past rugged sandstone bluffs and along dry creek beds lined with River Red Gums — a landscape that captures the rugged, untamed spirit of the Australian outback.

The highlight was a steep 1 km climb, gaining around 100 metres, to the summit of Red Range. From here, mesmerising views stretched across the vast, rugged landscapes of the Ikara–Flinders Ranges.

We continued towards the foot of the majestic Elder Range (Urdlu Warlpunha), winding through groves of native cypress trees before arriving at our second swag camp.

A hot bush shower, a freshly prepared dinner and good conversation around camp brought the day to a close. Then, we slipped into our swags beneath a sky ablaze with stars — another unforgettable night in the heart of the outback.

📍 Day 1 — Arkaba Walk | Ikara–Flinders Ranges, South Australia

13 km | Wilpena Pound to Black’s Gap Bush Camp

From the vast basin of Wilpena Pound to the rugged wilderness of Arkaba’s private wildlife conservancy, this 63,000-hectare former sheep station, day-1 on the walk offers an unforgettable introduction to the ancient landscapes, abundant wildlife and deep-time stories of the Flinders Ranges.

By late afternoon, we arrive at Black’s Gap bush camp. Swags are rolled out, the bush shower offers a refreshing rinse, and aperitivo comes with a front-row seat to the sun setting over Wilpena Pound.

Then comes a hearty camp dinner, local South Australian wine and a night beneath an impossibly vast canopy of outback stars.

Remote, raw and utterly magical. The perfect beginning to an extraordinary three-day hiking adventure.
