What’s on Sekai’s bookshelf?

For South African National Book Week, we’re sharing a few of the stories we love — books filled with curious girls, big imaginations, adventure, courage and possibility.

From scientists and athletes to music-makers and little girls with lots of questions, these are stories that remind our children that there are so many ways to be, dream and explore the world. 💛

And yes… we may have snuck Sekai and the Special Spanner and Sekai and the Helpful Hammer onto the shelf too. 😏🔧🔨
It is Sekai’s bookshelf, after all — surely she’s allowed to keep a couple of her own books on there? 😁

This National Book Week, we’re celebrating the stories our children see themselves in — and the ones that help them imagine who they might become.

What’s on your little one’s bookshelf right now? 📖✨

📚 Speaker Announcement: Book Dash

What if every child could own 100 books by the age of five?

That’s the vision behind Book Dash, a not-for-profit publisher creating culturally relevant African picture books for young children.

Through creative collaboration, volunteers create books that are freely available online, while donors and partners help get physical books into the hands of children.

On 22 October at Pan Afrikan Design Week 2026, Thembalethu Shangase, Arthur Attwell, Dr Diane Awerbuck, Subi Bosa and Mammuso Makhanya will come together for a special case-study dialogue exploring creative collaboration and early access to books.

What becomes possible when we design collaboration for greater impact?

Join the conversation.

Sunbird Library hosted a shortlisted author this morning!

Nafu Wants Food, written and illustrated by @subi_bosa, is a shortlisted book for the Otto Foundation Children’s Book Award 2026 in the Chapter Book/Graphic Novel category.

He stopped in to read a bit of the book to our Grade 7 readers and to answer their thoughtful questions. We always enjoy a visit from Subi!

Fun fact: Subi also illustrated one of the shortlisted Picture Books (Neo’s Invisible Blanket by @salaminamosese__books)! ⭐️

As a DIY girlie, one thing that gets me super excited is when I get to be creative and take old things I already had and transform them into something completely new. Even better when I get to gift those creations to someone I love.

I was so happy with the way this cake turned out. Made out of a chocolate cake layer, an almond citrus cake layer and a tub of red Swiss mirangue buttercreme, you would not even have guessed this cake was not intended to be just as it was!

All of these elements were left over bits and bobs from previous bakes and I put them together with some minor adjustments to create this delicious chocolate citrus cake with the smoothest, most delicious Swiss mirangue buttercreme/chocolate cream cheese hybrid frosting 😅 even the colours for the little illustration on top were leftover from other orders and cake projects 🥹

And would you look at those layers?!
Verdict: success on all levels 🎉

Thanks for being born and accepting my gift @subi_bosa 🫶🏾🎉

📚 Book #003 | Wonderfully Made

There are stories that make us smile, stories that make us dream, and stories that gently remind us of something we hope every child grows up knowing: you are wonderfully made. That’s what makes Wonderfully Made by Tshwanelo Serumola, beautifully illustrated by Subi Bosa, such a special story.

We love books that give little readers the language to understand who they are, celebrate what makes them unique, and dream without limits. This is one of those stories, a joyful reminder that there is magic in being exactly who you are.

For Malaika, this book has been such a beautiful way to explore confidence, identity and self-love, while discovering a little superhero who dreams big and reaches for the stars.

📖 The story: A joyful celebration of identity, self-worth and the beauty of being wonderfully made.

🌱 The seed it plants: Confidence, self-love, courage and the belief that there are no limits to what we can dream.

💬 Let’s talk about it: What makes you special? What do you love most about yourself? What would you dream of doing if you knew you could do anything?

And most importantly…

Never forget: you are wonderfully made. 💜

📚 BOOK #003 | Wonderfully Made

Some stories are about adventure. Some are about friendship. Some remind a little reader of something very important:

You are wonderfully made.

This week’s book is Wonderfully Made by Tshwanelo Serumola, beautifully illustrated by Subi Bosa. We love this story because it celebrates the magic of being exactly who you are. It invites little readers to see themselves as capable, special and full of possibility, and we especially love seeing a little South African superhero at the heart of it.

There’s something powerful about children seeing themselves reflected in the stories they read.

And this one? It definitely has a special place on Malaika’s bookshelf.

☀️ Malaika’s Sunshine rating: ☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️
📖 Book: 003
✍🏾 Author: Tshwanelo Serumola
🎨 Illustrator: Subi Bosa

A beautiful reminder for every little reader: You are wonderfully made, just as you are. ✨

One thing that can't be missing on anyone's birthday?! THE CAKE! Duh! 🎂

It was my bestie's birthday and of course I made him a cake! For this cake I let my creative juices flow and used up all the bits and bobs I had over from other bakes. Chocolate sponge, almond and citrus sponge, red SMBC, blue cream cheese frosting... Lol what?! I love reinventing things!
I'm extremely happy with how this came out and it was so delicious as well.

Follow along for part to where I will share the reveal 🍰

@subi_bosa you the bomb! Thanks for having a birthday and thanks for treating the world and all of us to your awesomeness. Everyone should have a Subi in their life 🫶🏾🥳💃🏽🪩🎉🎂🍾
