“Too Late For the Valley” Analog Collage from vintage road maps & magazines.

I made this collage while the first LNG terminal was going in and found it today while I was cleaning my studio.

The fact that Port of Brownsville can “lease” land to a company that then kills every Yucca, every plant, dislocates hundreds of Texas tortoises, hundreds of animals, threatened Texas Horned Lizard habitat is mind boggling, bat shit insanity.

I have been passing the leased Texas LNG site and every day there is another bulldozer, every day there is another machine staring down the Cenizo, threatening the habitat. My heart breaks, crumbles into a million pieces & I cry the rest of the way to Brownsville.

Ecocide. Left and right. Land being given away, destroyed for profit. Destroyed to build walls and cages which keep us away from the life force of Water. Massacred to keep taking from the Earth. Leaving hundreds of animals without homes. Leaving us without our home.

My only solace has been learning to seed collect for genetic diversity this summer. Reforesting what we can of the bird islands. Learning the plants of the Bahia. Figuring out what can be replanted once the destruction has happened.

May all walls crumble. May all buildings be over taken by Earth. May all people who are part of destruction be awakened to what is more real, more alive than money. May corrupt power structures collapse. May Earth be restored. So let it be.

Restoration over Destruction.

Reforesting West Bird Island with the most amazing community of lovers & fighters & caretakers. We are not alone in this struggle against greed, short term gain, and the mindset of fear & profit over connectedness & love. We must stay alive and open to Earth and her needs! She gives us everything. Without her we are COOKED, no matter how much money we extract from her desecration. WAKE UP. We need to stay tender to the pain. Let the pain move you forward towards the actions of love & protection. There are living beings all around you, they just do not look like you.

All the destruction of our sacred land & Laguna feels so overwhelming day to day, but opportunities like these remind me I can do what I can with what I have. Join Coastal Bend Bays and Estuaries Program & US Fish & Wildlife for the next phase of RE-FORESTING Bird Island in the Bahia Grande. 🌟

Bird Island’s trees died in 1936 when the Brownsville ship channel went in and all water to the Bahia Grande was cut off from the Laguna Madre. Since 2005, drudging has created flow back to the Bahia and hopes of restoring the island began. Bird Island is critical habitat for nesting herons, egrets, spoonbills, and cormorants. This is year three of restoration efforts!

Last year was such a blast, I had so many people reach out & ask about the next opportunity to help, and here it is! If you were one of those people, I hope you can make it out! (Please note you will be out in the sun for 8 hours minimum on an island with no trees except the ones we are planting, so if that does not sound up your alley, know your limits. ☀️👀)

Channel all the rage, put it into something valuable. Move your body. Plant something. Earth is waiting for her children to protect her, to spend time with her.
