From the curly hair to a love of animals and nature, dancing, making things, and standing up for what they believe in, Sarah has always been Sarah.

Looking back through the years, you can see so much growth and change, but also the same curiosity, creativity, playfulness, feminist spirit, and commitment to social justice that have continued to shape who they are and the art they make.

Here’s to 50 years of a full life of motion, and 50 years of becoming more and more themself. 💜

We still have tickets for Sarah’s 50th Birthday Serenade! Get your tickets today in our bio!

Sometimes, we have to pause the busy work to reflect and show gratitude to the people who help make it all possible.

Thank you, monthly donors! Your ongoing support helps keep SBDP dancing, creating, researching, and producing work throughout the year. It also gives us the stability to keep making art that challenges dominant narratives, centers queer and marginalized stories, and creates space for reflection, connection, and change.

Do you want to be part of something that is challenging our culture while creating emotive work? Become a monthly donor today!

Happy Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month!🌸

Today, we’re honoring queer and dyke ancestors who helped shape the Bay Area’s rich histories of art, activism, performance, and community. We’re also deeply grateful for the many Asian American collaborators who continue to shape and strengthen SBDP’s work today.

We thank the queer Asian ancestors who laid the groundwork for future generations to gather, create, organize, and live more fully as themselves. Their legacies continue to move through this community and through the work we make together.🪷

Or… Join the Movement Monthly ✨

The most impactful way to support SBDP is becoming a monthly contributor, empowering SBDP to plan boldly, create queer art consistently, and keep dancers & artists paid.

If just one-third of our entire email community donated $20/month,

SBDP would be fully financially sustained all year long with no pauses to creation, production, or opportunity.

This is a time & place where $10–$35/month makes a real difference.

Link in bio to set-up your tax-deductible recurring monthly donation! 💖

Thank you for helping us build a future where dance continues to be a force of joy, connection, and belonging. Your generosity keeps this community thriving.

With deep gratitude,
🏳️‍🌈The SBDP Team

P.S. Not in a position to give right now?
Share this post with someone else who also believes in the power of queer art! 💗

$🌿 Supporting SBDP means loving our home. Oakland and the East Bay are more than a backdrop for our dances—they are the soul of our work. In projects like This Land and Un-Changing Nature, we’ve explored how landscapes hold memory, history, and healing. Nature reminds us of what endures, refreshes our spirits, and connects us to something larger than ourselves. Through our performances, we strive to make both art and nature accessible—inviting audiences to experience the beauty of this place, and to recognize their own place within it. From the hills to the shoreline, from MURMUR to the upcoming Dyke HERstory Dance Tour, we are committed to celebrating and caring for the environment that is our home. 💡 There’s still a little more time to give to Keep the Lights On! We are about $6400 away from our goal! Every dollar is matched by the Meriama Fund, doubling your impact. Donate today at fundraising.fracturedatlas.org/sarah-bush-dance-project (link in bio) or Venmo @sarahbushdance. $🤗Supporting SBDP means supporting work that stirs the soul. "The tenderness of the elder's blessing first brought me to tears. And I wept from then on until I smiled and laughed again as the scream turned into sound and tone and howling and in my very bones I felt changed..." 🍃As artists, we don’t just make work for ourselves—we create to move, uplift, and connect. Our performances are made to reflect the lives of people like us, to offer moments of deep joy, and to affirm a sense of belonging within our community. We create work that acknowledges pain, celebrates resilience, and reminds us we’re not alone. 💌Please donate at https://fundraising.fracturedatlas.org/sarah-bush-dance-project. Thanks to the Meriama Fund, all donations will be matched up to $10k! Comment and share! $Supporting SBDP means supporting multiracial art, community, & culture.🫶🏻🫶🏼🫶🏽🫶🏾🫶🏿 🤟🏿When Sarah formed SBDP in 2007 it was important and just natural to have the dancers onstage and other artists in the production team be a reflection of the dance communities she was a part of. This included dancers from many different dance styles and dance environments – nightclubs, churches, classes. SBDP knows that the world we want to live in is diverse. SBDP knows that the more perspectives and varieties of life experience we have at any table or in any dance studio makes for richer process, community and art. 🤲🏽You can donate in 2 ways: @venmo - QUICK gift @sarahbushdance; write “Keep the Lights On” or 💡 so we can keep track @fractured.atlas- https://fundraising.fracturedatlas.org/sarah-bush-dance-project/general_support, tax deductible ✊🏻Please donate so SBDP can keep applying for grants, securing long-term and sustainable funding, and begin research for our upcoming Dyke History Tour with @bayarealesbianarchives. Making a gift right now today nourishes SBDP’s urgent need and plays an essential role in our 3-year strategic plan to keep producing queer, interracial, interdisciplinary art. Our goal is to reach $48k! Donate what you can and share with someone that you think can donate whether it’s $5 or $10,000. $🌱Supporting SBDP means supporting intergenerational queer art & community... 🌿Starting in 2017 Sarah did a restaging of Homeward, this time with an intergenerational cast. SBDP has since had intergenerational casting, staffing, leadership as a value. We truly believe and value that the world we want to live in needs the perspectives, experience, skills, connections from people of every age. We believe that creating works that show dancers of every age is a way to embody. 🪴Help us keep making intergenerational queer art & community. We accept quick gifts via Venmo @sarahbushdance (type Keep the Lights On or 💡) or tax-deductible donations via https://fundraising.fracturedatlas.org/sarah-bush-dance-project/general_support. Any amounts help us keep applying for grants, securing long-term and sustainable funding, and begin research for our upcoming Dyke History Tour @bayarealesbianarchives. 🌳Our goal is to obtain $48,000 through donor matches & relationships, general audience donations, upcoming fundraising events through the months of July & August. This $48,000 keeps the lights on through the end of 2025 and allows us to do everything we’re trying to do for bringing queer art into the world. If just 5 people donate $10,000 dollars each we’ll meet our goal. If 50 people donate $1000 dollars each we’ll meet our goal. If 500 people donate $100 each we’ll meet our goal. If 1000 people donate $50 each we’ll meet our goal. If 2500 people donate $25 each we’ll meet our goal. If 10,000 people donate $5 each we’ll meet our goal. Donate what you can and share with someone that you think can donate whether it’s $5 or $10,000. 🌈🐦‍⬛There are so many ways to celebrate Pride—through joy, resistance, remembrance, and radical self-expression.

We embodied all of that in the finale of MURMUR: Winged Belonging. As birds, we flew in together and broke out into a full bird strut—radiating hope, resilience, and queer magic with every step.👑
