Hanna Ji, current MDES student at the University of Arkansas, is demonstrating the power of design on a global scale. 🌍👏

As a Research Intern with the Refugee and Migration Lab, and in partnership with Rohingyatographer, she worked with Rohingya communities in the world’s largest refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh—conducting fieldwork for her thesis on the power of storytelling to empower young girls. We’re grateful to RML and Rohingyatographer for supporting Hanna throughout this work! ✨

Back in Northwest Arkansas, Hanna shares documentation of her fieldwork in her exhibition We too have dreams at sUgAR Gallery. On view through May 6. 🎨💫

𝑾𝒆 𝒕𝒐𝒐 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒅𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒎𝒔 brings together artwork created by Rohingya girls in refugee camps and local girls in NWA through storytelling workshops, alongside photographs taken during fieldwork. It also features selected works of Rohingya artists produced as part of Rohingyatographer’s Visual Storytelling and Human Rights course. The exhibition centers the girls’ voices and aspirations while the photographs offer glimpses into everyday life in the camps. Enriched with audio recordings of the girls chattering, some Rohingya youth singing a folk song, and ambiance from the camps, the works form a dialogue between lived experiences and imagined future. 🌱🤍

IT’S FINALLY HERE! The apocalypse, yes, but also the first teaser trailer for my short film “13 Fruits at the Final Bible Hour.” sUgAR Gallery will be hosting a screening of the rough cut at the closing reception for my exhibition “Pag-Uwi.”

📆 Saturday, March 14, 6-8PM reception with baybayin stamp making and a 7PM screening of the film

I cannot thank my wonderful, talented, and dedicated cast and crew enough. It has been an unbelievable experience getting to see your hard work realized on the screen— now I can share that feeling with you all! Aaaaahh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

shadow of divine perfection

it wasn’t until recently that i discovered what creativity is actually supposed to mean. i found that creativity is an inspiration from the Holy Spirit — that art is beautiful when it reflects the Creator. we are made in the image of God; therefore, we ourselves reflect Him. the work of our hands is beautiful all because of the work of His hands.

this project made these truths tangible. michelangelo once said, “the true work of art is but a shadow of the divine perfection.” emphasizing that art is is supposed to reflect the divine, also known as God, i based my entire project around this quote. using light and shadows as a metaphor, i explored what it looks like to reflect our Creator. not only does art reflect the divine, but we ourselves do as humans.

we are made in the image of God. we are shadows of divine perfection.

OVERFED / An overwhelming collection of 72 images by me over the semester :

How does inhaling so much information daily create an inability to fully digest the digital content that we are seeing? “Overfed” is a physical manifestation of the overwhelming anxieties brought upon by the daily mass consumption of images through social media. While we impulsively scroll and see posts one by one, it is a completely different experience to see the exhaustive amounts of images we take in all at the same time, laid out before your eyes in full. As the viewer stands surrounded by mixed and repeated images that resemble day-to-day posts, they are forced to sit with the formulated flood of information and the emotions that rise within them. By giving people a physical glimpse into my personal social media experience, I hope that it will allow people to reflect on their own experiences. How do you truly feel about all the media you are consuming?

Grateful for my first experience in a gallery and for those who took the time to see it all! 💌
