Calling all early birds! 🐓 From 10 October, discover Astrid van Nimwegen’s ‘A Few Mornings, an Evening’ in 'As Necessary as Bread'.

A small, tender gesture reveals the care and attention given to each animal. Take a glimpse into life on a small farm in the Czech countryside, where Van Nimwegen’s camera follows the everyday encounters between people and animals.

Her 2024 film captures moments of wonder, revealing each animal’s distinct personality. Even the final credits name them individually. In doing so, Van Nimwegen draws our attention to the living beings behind the meat, milk and eggs we buy.

<< In the early 20th century, Dutch colonialists transformed Sumatra’s rainforests into vast rubber plantations, where workers lived under conditions resembling slavery. The sexual exploitation of women became part of the system, creating a racial paradox and a silence passed down through generations. Through archival and contemporary footage, the film explores layers of memory, recognition, and resistance surrounding this hidden history.>>
•
The jury said:
<<Through meticulous investigation and artistry, the film exposes a profound historical injustice and a deeply suppressed chapter of Dutch colonial history: the systematic sexual exploitation and enslavement of women by Dutch colonisers in Sumatra, Indonesia. Using a vigilant analysis of archival evidence and a critical examination of state-sponsored censorship and erasure, the film brings to light how colonial power exploited women’s bodies, controlled the historical record, silenced their experiences, and erased them from collective memory. Therefore, the film becomes an important act of decolonisation of historical memory. It challenges the colonial narratives that have shaped whose suffering is remembered, whose voices are preserved, and whose humanity is acknowledged. For her painstaking detective work and its beautifully constructed film laced with pain and poetry, we are proud to honour The Clearing by Sabine Groenewegen>>

<< In the early 20th century Dutch colonial force turned Sumatran rainforest into vast rubber plantations. Men flocked from The Netherlands to the island to rule over contract workers under conditions akin to slavery. The open secret of women’s sexual indenture became a pilar of their machinery. A racial paradox hidden behind closed doors produced an unruly silence across generations. Attuned to ghosts of the unseen found and new footage embody the complex layers of recognition and resistance.>>
