I started analog photography with self portraiture. It was a way for me to learn photography but also to improve my relationship with my body. Then, I started making portraits with the idea of meaningful connections. I intend to continue both. Selfportraits to document myself. Portraits to meet new people and to deepen relationships. It is a way for me to document my time, our time.

I’d admired Sundari for years, so to see her name appear on the guest speaker list for WYRD Retreat was super exciting. I wanted to listen, to learn and to just spend unrushed time with someone with such creative oomph, and such empathy for those she photographs.

What I didn’t expect was to be her subject during our portraiture exercise. It was in these ten minutes I learned more than I would have done in a 1000 hour lecture on how to make someone feel comfortable in front of the camera.

Sundari isn’t afraid to ask the real questions, to look you in the eye and actually listen to your answer. Her energy, her interest in you and the space she created just by being in it, showed me just how the energy between photographer and client can shift the power of the photographs made in that moment.

I feel like me in these images - not the smile for the camera version. The one who’s been through it, the one who came out the other side, the mother and the wife, the friend, the photographer and the mid-thirty year old still figuring out life and being okay with that, being proud actually.

I’m so glad I said yes! Thank you, Sundari. 💙

“Portraits as Empathy with Sundari”

One of the sessions we’re excited to bring into WYRD is with Sundari.
She’ll be hosting a fireside talk on something most photographers don’t really get taught anywhere, so it’s important to talk about empathy in portraiture.

Sundari said something that really stuck with me.
Photographers often rush toward the art first, the shot, the style, the thing we want the image to say… and the person in front of us becomes secondary.
But portraits are a joined adventure.
If we do it properly, we’re not just making a beautiful image, we’re giving someone a way to see themselves without the flaws they fixate on. There’s magic in that if you take it seriously.

Sundari talks a lot about what it feels like to be both behind the camera and in front of it, and how her experience as a South Asian woman shapes the way she sees representation, comfort, and trust.

Her honesty on that is rare in this industry. It’s one of the reasons I wanted her at WYRD.

This group session is what it means to step into someone else’s world for a second, to understand the responsibility of taking a photograph that becomes part of someone’s history, not just part of our portfolio.

It’s a conversation photographers should be having more often, and it’s a skill that genuinely changes the way you work.
