THROWBACK THURSDAY

The Mayali Project - released back in 2020 is an outcome of a two-week Desert Pea Media project with the Gundjeihmi/Kunwinjku community members from Kakadu National Park aka The Kakadu Collective.

The project was a unique, collaborative creative process between Desert Pea Media, Red Lily Health (a local Indigenous-led Health Service) and an amazing group of students at the Jabiru Area School, who represent several clan groups of Kakadu and Arnhem Land. Also involved were local community members, Elders, artists, and community organisations.

'Mayali' is the Gundjeihmi/Kunwinjku word for 'cultural knowledge' and is used by several language groups in the region. The song was co-directed/written by and features Victor Rostron of Wildfire Munwurrk Band. Hailing from the extremely remote Stone Country of Central Arnhem Land, Victor speaks and sings in the critically endangered aboriginal languages of Dalabon, Kune and Rembarrnga. A highly respected senior culture man, singer, songwriter, artist and prolific musician, Victor reaches across cultures and holds keys to knowledge that bridges the gap across ancient and contemporary Australia.

The overall purpose of the broader project was to facilitate an important, inter-generational conversation about social and emotional well-being for Original Nations young people. Focusing on cultural identity, health and positive choices.

Desert Pea Media projects involve a dialogue-based storytelling process that encourages participants to analyze 'the real', 'the ideal' and 'the bridge'. In simple terms this means critically thinking about how to create positive change for yourself, for each other and for our communities.

We as a team feel deeply honoured and grateful to learn, share and create with the Jabiru community. These projects not only uplift and inspire audiences and community members, but everybody involved.

Jeweller Phoebe Porter has made special pieces for the show responding to the rich palette and intricate patterns of the Walking on Country collection. The jewellery is made from gold, copper, and black aluminium, to contrast dramatically and catch light as it moves down the runway. e.g.etal is presenting pieces from Phoebe's Raw / Refined and Quarter Twist series alongside captivating photographic images of the jewellery worn with the Walking on Country collection, shot by Elena Caldaci. The work will be on display for the duration of the festival and includes new conceptual pieces in gold, platinum, copper and stainless steel as well as some signature pieces in aluminium.

Strong community relationships make sure we have good access to Country, to jobs and to the right services and facilities.

Country is clean and safe. Springs and creeks flow strong and clean and there is plenty of bush tucker. In the right season, we find the plants and animals that have always been there. We have strong ceremony, language, dance, and song connecting families, Country, and culture”

2024 - What a year! Thank you for all the support and love for EDITION. Seeing the incredible people who wear the clothes that I make is such a special feeling. Thank you!

This year I was able to create a collection with Sarrita King, something we have been wanting for a long time. I could not be prouder of the work we created, topped off with one of my favourite shoots. Thank you Cindy, Natt and Elena for trusting our vision and making it come to life! So many amazing opportunities from this work coming in 2025.

Hope everyone has a wonderful break. I’ll be in and out of the studio over the Summer holidays and getting onto orders as soon as I can. See you in 2025, Alice x
