Take a good look at this photographic piece of history!! My heart is full from past week’s Chicago EXPO activities but this one by far is top 3. Saturday, the @southsidecommunityartcenter hosted our first Black Women in Arts Convening. It was a beautiful day for love, music, and community to be shared amongst some of the hardest working women and non-binary artist and administrators I know. The energy was magnetic as I was surrounded by talent and nice perfumes. Inhale this moment and understand that we all are up next. ✨

P.S. give the women of SSCAC a round of applause 👏🏾

I wrapped up a few weeks of travel in March with my first visit to the Twin Cities, for my first talk of the year. Thank you to Tia-Simone Gardner @ndgeonegro for the invitation to present my seminar, "Passage," as part of the EnviroThursday - Space Place and Humanities seminar series at @macalestercollege. This seminar was an opportunity for me to discuss my work "Passage," (curated by @kapfohl and commissioned by @neworleansmuseumofart in 2019) in a fuller context. I spoke in depth about my ongoing engagement with waterways (including the Gulf of Mexico and the Mississippi River) and the landscapes of the Gulf South though the lens of Black Geographies; my background in policy studies; issues of watershed management and environmental justice in our era of climate change; and my collaborative research practice. I took the attendees on an art history detour as we examined the lineage of panoramas as a form in painting, landscape photography, and early cinema. My time at Macalester also included visits with photo students, students in spatial humanities, and other fields of study.

My return to Chicago was delayed due to a Midwest winter combination of tornados in Chicago, and a surprise snowstorm in Minneapolis. Thank you Tia for the extended hospitality. ❤️ I had the extra special treat of reconnecting with Mohamud Mumin @hundredmp at @soomaalhouse, years after our introduction in NOLA thanks to @antenna.works in 2018, and finally meeting the fantastic photographer Yasmin Yassin @yazziz in person.

Thank you also to Jeremy Meckler, and the Mississippi River School for the shout-out. Shown here: 1. Minnehaha Falls, 2. the crew ❤️, 3: installation view of Passage at NOMA, 4 and 5: George Floyd Square, 6 and 7: seminar details. #reginaagu #contemporaryart #blackcontemporaryart

We are very pleased to announce the 10th iteration of the Jackman Goldwasser Residency. Each year, the Residency provides a platform for international, national, and local artists and curators to take creative risks within their practice and expand professional networks in the context of a historic, community-rooted art space in the heart of Chicago. ⠀
⠀
“While we were able to deepen direct support for Chicago artists last year, we’re particularly excited to welcome visiting artists and curators back to the Art Center, to learn and connect inside our space. Visiting residents are an essential part of the program, and in 2022 we’re eager to plant seeds for long-term engagement between practices located both here and there." says Megha Ralapati, Residency Program Director.⠀
