Here’s exactly what we are asking for.

The Grammys have it. The MTV VMAs have it. The MOBO Awards have it. The Western Canadian Music Awards have it. It is time Canada’s national music award had it too.

We — the Junos Afro Award Steering Committee — are formally proposing the creation of:

✨ AFRO MUSIC RECORDING OF THE YEAR ✨

A dedicated JUNO Award category for all traditional and contemporary music rooted in Continental African culture. Afrobeats. Amapiano. Highlife. Ndombolo. Kwaito. Afro-Fusion. Soukous. Gqom. Taarab and other genres rooted in sub-saharan and North African cultures!

There are 65+ eligible submissions ready for 2026. 105+ active Canadian Afro Music artists. 1.3 million Africans in Canada. A community that is growing, thriving, and long overdue for this recognition.

3 years of work. The moment is now.

We showed the problem. Now here’s why the solution is long overdue.

- 15 billion Spotify streams per year — up 500% since 2017.
- 250,000+ concert tickets sold across just 4 Canadian cities since 2022.
- Canadian Afro artists already winning JUNOs and getting international recognition — TOBi, Ryan Ofei, TheHonestGuy, Tome, Pierre Kwenders.
- 1.3 million Africans in Canada. 105+ active Canadian Afro Music artists.

This is not a genre that needs to prove itself. It already has.
The only thing missing is a JUNO Award category that reflects what’s actually happening in Canadian music. That reflects the diversity in Canadian music. That honours the work Afro- Canadian artists put in!

We are the Junos Afro Award Steering Committee, and we’ve been making this case for 3 years.

🇨🇦 Canada’s biggest music awards don’t have a category for African music.

Not Afrobeats. Not Amapiano. Not Highlife. Not Afro-Fusion. Not Bongo Flava. NOTHING.

Instead, our music — one of the fastest-growing genres on the planet — gets filed under “Global Music.” A catch-all shared with dozens of unrelated genres, where it can’t be recognized or evaluated on its own cultural terms.

Afro-Canadian artists feel it. Many don’t even bother submitting anymore.

This is the problem the Junos Afro Award Steering Committee has been fighting to fix for 3 years. Swipe to understand the full picture.
