Three of my favorite things about Joël Brodovsky-Adams’s new show, Like A Rumor? It’s inspired by clubbing; there’s a glaze pattern based on an archival @eckhaus_latta sweater; the wall of schlongs—er, wall hooks. (“It’s a handbag!”)

So proud of this one and so grateful to @jbaceramics and @super___house for being so open and trusting. I broke nothing! But did get very dusty. Show closes 10/17 so make haste!!

October marks a season in flux, making transformation an apt thread through this month’s standout collectible design exhibitions. Designers around the world are revisiting places and materials that have long informed their practice, then pushing them in unexpected directions.

From Fernando Mastrangelo (@IAmFM)’s mesmeric cast furnishings mapping contested territories to a group show at @SarahShermanSamuel’s new gallery celebrating the Midwest’s maker culture, click the link in our bio to see the full lineup of this month’s must-see shows.

Revisiting the Primary Bedroom I designed for the 2022 @brooklynshowhouse I look forward to visiting this year's iteration. I wanted to design a space which would both reflect and augment the fantastical experiences one might encounter in one’s dream life. I first looked to the Surrealist art movement for inspiration, incorporating such elements as trompe l’oeil, plays on the human form, and absurdist juxtapositions into my design. Surrealism’s progression coincided with that of the French Art Deco period, whose motifs can also be found throughout the spaces.

The imaginary client I kept in mind from was Elsa Schiaparelli, the fashion designer whose garments themselves, it could be argued, were Surrealist works. I drew just as much inspiration from her couture dressmaker details as from the offbeat, humorous touches she regularly added with élan. The black moiré silk lining the bedroom walls was a frequently used fabric in Schiaparell’s work, and her signature color “Shocking Pink” makes numerous appearances throughout my design. In fact, this fictional collaboration revealed itself to be kismet. In my research, I discovered that Schiaparelli designed a perfume in 1940 called “Sleeping” which was meant to be spritzed moments before drifting into slumber. The scent was intended to illuminate the subconscious and “light the way to ecstasy."

Two other Surrealists whose works influenced my design are Jean Cocteau and Salvador Dalí, both of whom Schiaparelli collaborated with during her career. My (mostly) monochromatic color scheme came to me after watching Cocteau’s 1946 film La Belle et la Bête, in which the Beast’s 17th century château looked so gorgeous in black and white, lit only by magical anthropomorphized candelabras. In my early 20s, I made a solo pilgrimage to the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Spain. It was a true Surrealist Gesamtkunstwerk - being there felt like walking through Dalí’s dreams. As endlessly inspiring as I found that place to be, my intention here was not to literally superimpose my specific dream imagery but rather to create optimal conditions for anyone to drift off into whatever new reality their subconscious may reveal.

Architectural Digest named ceramic artist Joël Brodovsky-Adams as “one to watch” for his enticing sculptures.
In his first solo show titled “Like a Rumor” at Superhouse gallery you see a variety of his work, both as aesthetical and functional. #joelbrodovskyadams #superhouse #ceramics #artist

Lyle Gallery has a publication!

Creative New York is for creatives, and for anyone who loves this city’s art and culture. With this publication, we are covering beyond art and design to dance, film, theater, galleries, public art, and the creative economy and policies that affect creatives.

It’s going to be interesting, sometimes unexpected, and a little lesbian (but I promise not all of it). Each issue lands on the 1st, with new visual essays arriving throughout the month.

Issue No. 1 just dropped, starting with an afternoon with @maryroyallstudio , a Brooklyn painter who forages for light in the city’s streets.

Swipe through for a preview of what to expect.

Subscribe free at the link in bio or creativenewyork.co.
The first 1,000 subscribers get grandfathered in for free forever :)

Here we go 💫
Lin

An afternoon with Mary Royall Wilgis, the Brooklyn painter who forages for light.

On the scene at Tribeca’s biggest opening night of the season.

What to see this month.

Have you heard of Jill Johnston? I hadn’t until recently, but I think we’d be friends.

New visual essays land every week this month.

Brooklyn artists tell the city what it would take for them to stay.

Design events worth catching this week, from our calendar at calendar.palebluemagazine.com.

1️⃣Time and Place with Almanac Hardwood
Our friends at Sample House (@samplehouse.nyc) host Baltimore custom mill Almanac Hardwood (@almanac.hardwood) for an evening on the terroir of wood: how a tree’s location, age, and history stay visible in the grain of a finished floor, and how careful sourcing and milling of reclaimed and sustainably harvested lumber can preserve those stories rather than sand them away. As usual with Sample House, expect a good crowd and a great conversation.

📍Sample House, Long Island City, NY
📆September 24, 6:30 to 8:30pm

2️⃣Like a Rumor
Joël Brodovsky-Adams (@jbaceramics) is a longtime favorite of ours, and this is his first solo show with Superhouse (@super___house). The vessels and lighting are built entirely from wheel-thrown parts, then covered in pattern until they read less like objects and more like characters, posed and ready to move. It’s the energy of queer nightlife translated into clay, playful and precise at the same time. Go see it if you can.

📍Superhouse, 120 Walker St #6R, New York
📆Through October 17

3️⃣Artifacts by Boym Partners
Constantin and Laurene Boym launch a new collection at Available Items (@available_items), which continues to be one of our favorites in the Hudson Valley for exactly this kind of show. Artifacts is a series of floor, table, and wall lighting made from found sycamore bark, the natural camouflage of each piece brought out with painted details that reference local Native American traditions of painting on trees and sticks. Integrated LEDs turn the wall behind each fixture into a soft wash of light, so the bark reads almost like a relic.

📍Available Items, Tivoli, NY
📆Through October 4, 12pm to 5pm

Find these and more on the calendar, where you can browse what’s on near you and around the world. If you’re hosting something design related, big or small, submit it at calendar.palebluemagazine.com/submit.

#throwback @paajoewks at @super___house in 2024 ✨

Born Joseph Tetteh-Ashong, Paa Joe is a second-generation fantasy coffin maker from Ghana’s Ga community, where funerary traditions help honor a person’s life and vocation as they transition to the afterlife. He learned the craft from his uncle, Kane Kwei, who pioneered the first figurative coffin in the early 1950s after a cocoa-pod-shaped palanquin intended for a chief became the chief’s coffin when he died during its construction. Paa Joe apprenticed with Kwei for twelve years before opening his own studio. More than six decades later, he’s applying that same tradition to New York, turning symbols of the city—from a yellow taxi and Birkin bag to a hotdog and subway rat—into carved wooden sculptures.

What happened to making something simply because you wanted to see it exist?

Richard Snyder’s Round the World comes from a period when furniture was allowed to be strange, humorous and difficult to explain and when New York’s Art et Industrie was giving a home to makers who moved freely between art, craft and design.
More than thirty years later, the confidence of it still feels refreshing.
