Scuba diving in New York City for the @nytimes - before this summer I didn’t think it was a thing that people did. And why would anyone want to? With cold water, near zero visibility, and nothing interesting to see, what was the point? All completely wrong impressions, as it turns out. I know now that diving around New York is actually incredible. There is in fact loads of aquatic life, thousands of shipwrecks, and is enjoyed by the most wonderfully diverse community of people who aren’t dissuaded by occasional pea soup conditions.

Thank you @arielleyasmin_ for developing this story and writing a piece that so well describes the breadth of the scuba scene.

And to @andrewhinderaker for your confidence, direction and a rare sensitivity to edit with a subtle eye.

#SpitTheSnorkel 🤿🙅‍♀️ Snorkels are great for the surface, but DON'T belong in your mouth underwater! And yes, we know you see photos of people doing it all the time. Repeat after me - snorkels are NOT to be used for funneling liquid 😆🤭
